Canadian Child Care Federation
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March had a dramatic impact on daily life in Canada. Provincial and territorial governments ordered the majority of businesses and public services to close to reduce the risk of the coronavirus spreading and introduced measures to maintain some level of community and economic well-being. The federal government provided significant leadership and investments through a series of national benefits and supports to help organizations and individuals weather the resulting economic storm.

Ontario is proposing 'sneaky' changes to child care
InsideHalton.com
Ontario’s Ministry of Education is proposing changes to child-care regulations that would allow operators to group infants and toddlers together, reduce staff-to-child ratios for some age groups and lower qualification requirements for staff.
Child-care advocates said the proposed changes would make child care worse, not better, and they criticized the government for releasing the proposal in the middle of a pandemic, when parents are stressed and many operators are just trying to stay afloat.

Daycare owner says COVID-19 regulations make it almost impossible to run her business
CityNews
A Mississauga private daycare owner says even though the Ontario government recently revised its child-care centre screening guidelines, the COVID-19 regulations are making it tough to run her business.
Jackie Sheppard, the owner of Streetsville Children’s Centre and Streetsville Academy, says she has re-opened with fewer kids, greater staffing costs and COVID-19 restrictions from Peel Public Health that are almost impossible to work with; in particular, the rules about symptoms and sending kids with home with runny noses.

Organizers of Manitoba’s largest indoor farm show want to support 15 daycare centres using funds through the AgDays Gives Back Program.
This year, they have decided to make a change in their community giving program for the 2021 Intake. General Manager Kristen Phillips says they’ve made some adjustments because of COVID-19. “With everything going on in the world we would like to support the communities where our exhibitors and patrons live so we have decided to open our grant money up to licensed early learning centres for the 2021 granting year.”

Red tape a big barrier to boosting child-care spaces in N.L., say unlicensed providers
CBC News
As the province seeks to increase affordable spots in the regulated child-care sector, some people working in unregulated child care say the impending changes offer no incentives for them to get licensed, and in some cases may actually make it harder to stay in a field that can't keep up with demand.
The Sept. 30 budget contained a big boost for child care with the promise of funding 8,000 $25-a-day daycare spaces across Newfoundland and Labrador, starting in January. It's a shot in the arm for the sector, particularly for parents — but unregulated day homes won't qualify, and the operator of one such home says she can't afford to work at that rate without a subsidy.

Quebec to receive federal funding to support child care
Cision
The Government of Canada has been working closely with the Government of Quebec to ensure all families have access to affordable and high-quality child care. The COVID-19 pandemic has created new challenges, including temporary closures and loss of critical revenue from placement fees, which have put the sector at risk.
