Child-care cash to help with urgent COVID-19 needs in sector, Hussen says

The federal minister in charge of the government's child-care agenda says the Liberals won't abandon the sector once urgent, pandemic-related funding runs out before the end of the economic fallout from COVID-19. The Liberals promised the provinces and territories $625 million over the next six to eight months, which at the most would go to the end of the federal fiscal year.

Child-care centres may not go to full capacity in September: Expert

While this may be welcome news for some parents eager to get back to work, a lot of licensed child-care centres may not actually be able to reopen or to increase the number of children they serve.

Child-care centres in Ottawa can increase the size of their groups to as many as 15 children, as part of Ontario's Stage 3 reopening plan — and many daycare operators say they're ready. The change comes after weeks spent with smaller cohorts of 10, including staff, so everyone could settle into the changes COVID-19 requires.

Ontario continues to gradually and safely reopen child-care for working parents

The Ontario government recently announced its plan to allow licensed child-care centres across Ontario to open at full capacity starting September 1, 2020. This decision was made in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health and the COVID-19 Command Table. As a result, parents will be able to return to work knowing their children are in a safe and supportive care setting.

Hundreds of new daycare spaces opening up for Kamloops, Okanagan families

Hundreds of families across the Thompson-Okanagan will now have access to new and expanded child-care spaces. “Despite the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought, our goal to create new child-care spaces throughout the province continues to gain momentum,” said Katrina Chen, Minister of State for Child Care in a release. “We’ve been able to fund nearly 16,800 new spaces in the past two years, helping to fulfil our promise of better, more affordable child-care options for children and families throughout B.C.”
