Just over 50 per cent of Ontario daycares have reopened as school nears

September is here, but only just over half of Ontario's 5,523 child-care centres have reopened, with one advocate linking the issue to staffing problems and the overall back-to-school plan by the provincial government. As of last Thursday, 2,960 provincial centres have reopened, according to the latest figures provided by the Ministry of Education.

Family daycare centre workers continue rotating strike; negotiations continue next week

The home child-care services workers' rotating strike continued in the Suroit region (Vaudreuil-Dorion) on Friday, while negotiations are set continue next week with the Ministry of Families. Some 10,000 family child-care providers, who are members of the FIPEQ (Federation des intervenantes en petite enfance), which is affiliated with the Centrale des unions du Québec (CSQ), called a rotating strike, which will happen throughout Quebec until Sept. 18.

Feds, Province teaming up to provide $147 million in funding for child care

The federal government, combined with the government of Ontario are working together to ensure families have access to safe, affordable, and high-quality child care. To do this, Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development; and Stephen Lecce, Ontario’s Minister of Education announced a new, one-year program entitled: Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, which was created to provide additional support for early learning and child care.

New West to survey child-care providers in September

The City of New Westminster will be surveying child-care providers to determine what impacts they’ve encountered during the pandemic. A child-care task force is one of five COVID-19 pandemic response task forces currently operating in the city. In a recent update to council, the task force reported that surveys will be sent out to child-care operators in September to inquire about topics such as challenges and concerns they’re currently facing, supports they would find beneficial (including resources such as sanitizer, masks etc.), challenges faced by parents of children in their care and potential future short- and long-term challenges.

Coronavirus: Durham child-care centres open to full capacity

As licensed child-care centres across the province open up to full capacity amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, staff are taking extra precautions as they adapt to having more children in each room. As kids naturally want to be close and play with one another, staff admit it will be a difficult task to keep them apart.
