Gingivitis bacteria manipulate your immune system so they can thrive in your gums
Medical News Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new research report published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology shows how the bacteria known for causing gum disease, Porphyromonas gingivalis, manipulates the body's immune system to disable normal processes that would otherwise destroy it. Specifically, the report shows that this pathogen prompts the production of the anti-inflammatory molecule Interleukin-10 (IL-10). This, in turn, inhibits the function of T-cells, which would otherwise help to protect the host from this particular microbial infection. More

Why getting local is the trend
Dentist Identity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the past, business owners who wanted to harness the entire power of the Internet had to make sure that their websites were optimized and ranked high in traditional search engine results pages. And the thing about ranking in the traditional manner is that you're not just number for one search query within your community but you're number one all over the world. While it took so much more time and effort to get to the top of the SERPs this way, business owners like dentists felt it was all worth it because everyone all over the world will be able to see your website. Quick detection of periodontis pathogens
Medical News Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Twelve million Germans suffer from periodontitis, an inflammation that can lead to the loss of teeth if left untreated. A new diagnostic platform enables the pathogens to be detected quickly, enabling dentists to act swiftly to initiate the right treatment. Bleeding gums during tooth brushing or when biting into an apple could be an indication of periodontitis, an inflammatory disease of the tissues that surround and support the teeth. Bacterial plaque attacks the bone, meaning teeth can loosen over time and in the worst case even fall out, as they are left without a solid foundation to hold them in place. More

How your dentist knows you're not flossing
Oral Answers    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A recent survey by the American Dental Association found that just under half of all Americans floss their teeth daily. What about the other half? My guess is that they're the ones who floss twice a year — right before their dental checkups. They think they can pull a fast one on us, but here's a little secret: dentists can tell when you've been flossing and when you haven't. More
