Possible link between obesity and gum disease
Medical News Today
Impacting approximately one-third of the U.S. population, obesity is a significant health concern for Americans. It's a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain forms of cancer, and now, according to an article published in the January/February 2013 issue of General Dentistry, the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), it also may be a risk factor for gum disease.

Dentistry at a crossroads: The big issues
Dr. Bicuspid
What are the Big Issues? In dentistry, they involve decision-making. Making a decision implies that there has been careful and thorough deliberation and research of the dental practice. However, in my experience, many dentists tend to skip the stop-and-think step.
So in this first Dentistry at a Crossroads column, I am going to outline a system for astute decision-making that dentists can use when tackling the Big Issues.
Heartfelt event is one way to break down barriers to dental care
Northhumberland News
The Northumberland Oral Health Coalition would like to commend local dental professionals and those across Ontario who are offering free dental cleanings as part of the Gift from the Heart event.
Because oral health is not covered by OHIP, a large number of Ontarians is unable to access dental care. It's no surprise, then, to see Gift from the Heart events fill up quickly with an overwhelming number of people seeking this free dental service.

Dental education puppets
Dental Dynamics
If you have gone to the dentist, you may have seen one of these puppets before in a dental office. They are pretty popular in dental offices that are popular with children. They tend to be used as educational tools to help children understand things about their teeth. They also have an added benefit of being incredibly weird looking, especially since the dental education puppet also has a way of looking like a cute plush toy.

Reduce your risk for bad reviews from dental patients
Modern Dental Marketing
This article isn't about reputation management, Yelp!, or choosing verbiage to respond to negative patient reviews. Instead, I want to discuss how your team members' words and actions are interpreted by patients.
Most often, dentists who receive bad reviews that mention kind, caring, reputable team members feel betrayed by the reviewing patient. Doctors may also question what's occurring at the front desk, on the phone, and at check-out, when he or she isn't present. How can you know that your team is taking great care of your patients? How can you make sure that their words and actions are positive in the eyes of your patients?
