    The Dentistry iQ Network
Oral health with be celebrated on March 20, 2013, under the theme "Healthy teeth for a healthy life." It reflects the significant role oral health plays in health in general, in quality of life and individual self-confidence. World Oral Health Day is organized by FDI World Dental Federation, with the support of Listerine (Johnson & Johnson) and Unilever Oral Care, all its member associations and the oral health community and professionals. It reminds us that healthy teeth, gums and mouth play a crucial role in our ability to work or study without constant, nagging and painful toothache, in our self-confidence and in the health of our whole body.

Sports and energy drinks can cause permanent tooth damage
    Teeth Removal.com
A study published in the May/June 2012 issue of General Dentistry, the journal of the Academy of General Dentistry, found that an alarming increase in the consumption of sports and energy drinks, especially among adolescents, is causing irreversible damage to teeth — specifically, the high acidity levels in the drinks erode tooth enamel, the glossy outer layer of the tooth.

Possible link between obesity and gum disease
    Medical News Today
"We know that being overweight can affect many aspects of a person's health," says Charlene Krejci, DDS, MSD, lead author of the article. "Now researchers suspect a link exists between obesity and gum disease. Obese individuals' bodies relentlessly produce cytokines, proteins with inflammatory properties. These cytokines may directly injure the gum tissues or reduce blood flow to the gum tissues, thus promoting the development of gum disease." The best way to minimize the risk of developing gum disease is to remove plaque through daily brushing, flossing, rinsing, and professional cleanings.

New stingless device for cavity fillings or extractions
    Plaza Dental Group
One of the biggest fears of anyone going to the dentist and having to deal with either a cavity filling or extraction is the pain that is associated with anesthesia. This is because the anesthesia needs to be applied directly to the gums and that means using a needle in order to do it, which can cause anxiety and pain for most patients. It is also a leading reason why most people will neglect going to the dentist and wait until it’s a much bigger problem.

    Curing sealants, varnishes
    The Dentistry iQ Network
For hygienists, the ability to do our jobs thoroughly and efficiently helps solidify our talent and demonstrate our value in the practice. Factors outside of our control, though, often can have an impact on productivity. One example is office technology. In some cases, we choose our own products, but in other situations we simply use what the practice is equipped with, which may or may not have been selected with an eye toward maximizing the hygienist's productivity. However, by paying close attention to how products impact our efficiency, we can identify areas where improvements can be made.

House of Cards: A fragile balance in our health
    The Dentistry iQ Network
Many hygienists simply work with whatever is provided in an office, regardless of whether the equipment or workspace is conducive to wellness. For years I've tried to simplify the concept of dental hygiene workplace wellness. How we practice clinically is an incredible balancing act involving one's head, hands, and heinie. All three parts are equally important and involve the most common sites for cumulative trauma disorders or workplace-related injuries sustained by clinical dental hygienists.
