Overcoming barriers to affordable dental care

In light of the recent arrest of the unlicensed Burnaby dentist Tung Sheng (David) Wu earlier this month, a vigorous debate was sparked around the cost of dental work and how much of a barrier there is to getting proper care. "There's a big social question out there around dentistry and why it isn't part of the public health system," says Jerome Marburg, Registrar and CEO of the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. "There is a portion of the population for which cost is a hurdle."

Oakville dentist brings smiles to ErinoakKids

Broad smiles were on display recently at ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development when Oakville dentist Dr. Dale Schisler presented the centre with an $8,430 donation. This was not the first time Schisler and his colleagues at Hopedale Dental Care have donated the proceeds from professional teeth-whitening services to ErinoakKids in support of local children with disabilities.

Acupuncture could help in the dentist's chair

Acupuncture may provide relief for dental patients who reflexively gag during procedures like teeth impressions, according to Italian researchers. Up to 20 per cent of the U.S. population has severe anxiety at the dentist's office. People who cannot help their gag reflex may unintentionally deprive themselves of the best dental care, write Giuseppa Bilello and Antonella Fregapane, both from the University of Palermo in Sicily.

The longevity of teeth and oral implants

A recent systematic review published in the Journal of the American Dental Association by Levin and Halperin-Sternfeld regarding the longevity of teeth and dental implants has raised some interesting, and long overdue questions. This review should have clinicians talking and hopefully talking among dental specialties.

Flood of new dental patients in Colorado meets trickle of caregivers

Hundreds of thousands of Coloradans will have new dental care benefits in 2014 under twin health-reform efforts, but state leaders now must scramble to find providers who will care for them. A new dental benefit for adults with Medicaid, coupled with an Obamacare expansion of eligibility and pediatric benefits required on the state exchange, will balloon the number of paying patients. But many Colorado dentists say the new patients still won't come with enough revenue to be worth the headaches of care and bureaucracy.

ADA and ADA Foundation efforts underway to provide Typhoon Haiyan relief

The ADA and the ADA Foundation have plans in place to support disaster relief in the Philippines for dentists and members of the dental community adversely affected by Typhoon Haiyan, which struck Nov. 8. In a Nov. 18 letter to Dr. Fernando M. Fernandez, president of the Philippine Dental Association, ADA Executive Director Dr. Kathleen O'Loughlin expressed the concern of the ADA and asked that the Association be kept abreast of immediate needs for dental services and personnel, the status of the dental community and how oral health services have been affected by the disaster.
