In Memoriam Sadie M. Devino
(Mercury Fuel, Waterbury, CT)
Mrs. Sadie M. (Hajjar) Devino, 93, of Waterbury entered into the gates of heaven on Thursday, September, 19, 2019 at the VITAS Hospice Unit at St. Mary's Hospital surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Michael J. Devino, Sr.
Sadie was born in Waterbury, on November 17, 1925, daughter of the late Martha (Nejame) and David Hajjar. She was the oldest of four siblings and at a very early age she cared for her ailing mother and siblings, while working at the family store, "Dave's Superette", on Willow Street in Waterbury. Sadie and her sisters had a love for music and performed at churches and local functions. Being a classically trained soprano, Sadie shared her voice as a member of the Blessed Sacrament Choir for over 50 years. It brought her great joy when she recruited her son Dave to sing alongside her. In 1946, she met and later married Michael Devino Sr. who both made a perfect match for each other, not only in business, but in life. She worked tirelessly to raise a family and help start a business, often times watching children and doing bookwork on the kitchen table in their apartment. She was proudly the matriarch of Mercury Fuel Service, Inc., where she enjoyed working everyday alongside her family until her recent illness. She was highly respected for her professional and kind demeanor by everyone who encountered her.
Sadie was instrumental in keeping her family close. Sundays were spent singing at mass and then preparing dinner for her family. Gathering for meals and holidays together with her family, especially George and Dolores, were times Sadie cherished. Being a graduate of Waterbury Catholic High School, the catholic education she received made a lasting impression on her. As an adult, she became a dedicated supporter of local parochial schools. In 2007, she anonymously established a scholarship fund at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, which will now be named "the Michael and Sadie Devino Scholarship fund". She served in various positions on the Blessed Sacrament Parish and she was honored in 2009, along with her son Dave, by receiving the honor of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. During her lifetime, Sadie's generosity touched numerous organizations in the community. She enjoyed giving back in many ways and could be found attending functions at schools, charities, churches, and supporting the arts in Waterbury. Her community involvement also included preparing monthly meals for Saint Vincent DePaul Mission.
Sadie leaves behind her sons, Michael J. Devino Jr. and his wife Donna of Watertown, the late David Devino Sr. and his wife Karen of Middlebury, Thomas Devino and Aschlynn of Middlebury, Martin Devino and his wife, Elizabeth of Middlebury and her brother, George Hajjar and his wife, Dolores of Waterbury. She also leaves behind her seven grandchildren, Stefanie Devino, David Devino Jr. and his wife Stephanie, Sarah Paterno and her husband Robert, Christopher Devino and his wife Rebecca, Michael Devino III and his wife Carissa, Martin Devino Jr., Sadie Devino, her two great grandchildren, Julia and Audrey Devino, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Marie Connor and Madeline Compton. The Devino family would like to extend their gratitude to the CNA's, caregivers and the staff at St. Mary's Hospital, who gave us strength and support during this difficult time.
