Cautious investors saw surprising results in 2014

Last year didn't turn out to be what analysts thought it would be for stocks in Illinois or nationally, as surprise twists in the economy turned expected losers into winners and global behemoths like Caterpillar into losers. In general, companies that depend on selling their products into a strong global economy lagged, even though analysts had assumed they'd be big gainers when 2014 began.

PwC: Illinois venture deals hit $1B last year

By now, it's no secret that Chicago and Illinois companies had a very good year in 2014 when it comes to venture funding. New York-based CB Insights also put the Illinois total at $1 billion. Dow Jones VentureSource put the Chicago total at $862 million.

Obama seeking tax increases on wealthy to help middle class

President Barack Obama is turning to his biggest television audience of the year to pitch tax increases on the wealthiest Americans and put the new Republican Congress in the position of defending top income earners over the middle class. As Obama continues to signal what he will propose during the State of the Union address, senior administration officials said during the weekend that he will call for raising the capital gains rate on top income earners and eliminating a tax break on inheritances.

High-speed trader DRW to acquire Chicago rival Chopper Trading

High-speed trading firm DRW Trading Group said it has agreed to buy the assets of rival Chopper Trading LLC as the industry continues to consolidate. The deal is expected to allow the Chicago-based firms to cut costs amid increased pressure from regulators and competitors, with DRW founder Donald Wilson saying they will be able to "more efficiently provide liquidity to the financial markets."

Chicago's new gift to big campaign donors

On its face, Chicago’s municipal pension system is an integral part of the Chicago city government. The system is included in the city’s budget, it is directly funded by the city, and its various boards of trustees include city officials and mayoral appointees. Yet, when it comes to enforcing the city’s anticorruption laws in advance of Chicago’s closely watched 2015 municipal election, Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration is suddenly arguing that the pension funds are not part of the city government at all.
