Time for investors to simplify their bonds

With all the talk of potential interest rate increases in the U.S., fixed-income exchange-traded funds are in vogue. Through February, investors poured more than $20 billion into bond ETFs — 67 percent of net flows to all exchange-traded products, according to research firm XTF Inc. — as they looked to sync their fixed-income exposure with a view on rates.

Chicago avoids $20M payment after renegotiating swap contract

The city has managed to reduce a threatened $58 million in payments triggered by a downgrade of Chicago's debt rating Friday, and the city may be able to avoid the expense altogether. A spokeswoman for the mayor's office said the city has lessened the potential payments by $20 million by renegotiating the terms of an agreement with BMO Harris Bank.

Volkswagen to announce $1B investment in Mexico
Reuters
German carmaker Volkswagen will announce an investment worth around $1 billion in Mexico to expand its Puebla plant, a person familiar with the matter said. The investment, aimed at production of the carmaker's Tiguan compact, is due to be unveiled and is expected to generate about 1,900 jobs, the person said.

GM plans $5B stock buyback, averts showdown with hedge funds

General Motors has headed off a potentially divisive proxy fight by agreeing to buy back $5 billion in stock by the end of next year. The move announced is part of a deal with Harry Wilson, a former member of the government task force that restructured GM coming out of its 2009 bankruptcy.
