CME's Terry Duffy on the trade that changed his life

In 1981, future CME Group Inc. chief Terry Duffy was a 21-year-old in a fix. With a few years of college behind him, he had persuaded his mother to mortgage the family's Mount Greenwood bungalow for $50,000 so he could trade futures. Just weeks after joining the trading pits, he lost the $50,000 and another $100,000.

The Chicago Chapter of the National Investor Relations Institute, NIRI-Chicago, has elected six officers
— including CFA Chicago member, and incoming chapter president, Elizabeth Higashi — and eight directors to its board for the 2013-2014 term. At its annual meeting, the chapter also will recognize Steven Eschbach and other retiring board members, as well as two chapter members who were named NIRI Fellows.
IPO numbers come back from the dead

Buoyed by a robust stock market, IPOs are making a stirring comeback around Chicago, with deal volume on track to reach levels not seen in nearly a decade. Following Gogo Inc.'s pricing late last week, the Itasca-based provider of in-flight wireless service plans launched at $17 a share, selling 11 million shares and raising $187 million — a half-dozen Chicago-area companies have completed initial public offerings this year.

Chicago Fed National Activity Index for May

Led by improvements in production-related indicators, the Chicago Fed National Activity Index increased to -0.30 in May from -0.52 in April. Two of the four broad categories of indicators that make up the index increased from April, but only one of the four categories made a positive contribution to the index in May.
United Airlines ups its investment in Dreamliners

Forget the battery problems. United Airlines has decided it can't get enough of those Dreamliners. Chicago-based United said it will increase its 787 Dreamliner order from 55 to a total 65 aircraft (including six previously-delivered aircraft).

Annual Dinner Speaker Nate Silver talks LeBron's odds of catching Jordan

Nate Silver writes: "After LeBron James and the Miami Heat won their second consecutive N.B.A. championship, I noted on Twitter that James was on the same pace as the Chicago Bulls great Michael Jordan. Both James and Jordan won their first championship at 27 and their second at 28, I wrote. Jordan went on to win four more N.B.A. titles, for a total of six."

Banks present crisis plan to the Fed
