Big firms eye Canada COVID-19 vaccine distribution plans

With plans to begin distributing COVID-19 vaccines in January, the Canadian government appears to have no shortage of companies interested in the massive, and potentially lucrative, logistics undertaking.
Representatives from 74 companies attended a bidders' conference recently, where federal officials laid out the complex requirements for transporting as many as 358 million vaccine doses from manufacturers to locations across Canada. Among the companies attending were major logistics providers UPS, FedEx, DHL, Purolator, C.H. Robinson, TFI International, Air Canada, Bollore, Kuehne + Nagel, Bison Transport and Challenger.

Hong Kong takes formal WTO action On US 'Made in China' order

The Hong Kong government is taking formal action at the World Trade Organization against the U.S. over pending regulation that the city label goods manufactured there as "Made in China."
Hong Kong has launched procedures under the WTO's dispute settlement mechanism requesting a bilateral consultation with the U.S., Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Edward Yau said at a press briefing recently.

Rail traffic for October and the week ending October 31, 2020

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending October 31, 2020, as well as volumes for October 2020.
U.S. railroads originated 912,772 carloads in October 2020, down 6.6 percent, or 64,634 carloads, from October 2019. U.S. railroads also originated 1,169,874 containers and trailers in October 2020, up 10.0 percent, or 105,966 units, from the same month last year. Combined U.S. carload and intermodal originations in October 2020 were 2,082,646, up 2.0 percent, or 41,332 carloads and intermodal units from October 2019.

CP announces best-ever month for Canadian grain transport, exceeds 3 MMT for first time

Canadian Pacific set a new record for shipping Canadian grain and grain products in October, with 3.04 million metric tonnes (MMT) moved, the first time ever CP has exceeded 3 MMT in a month. This exceeds the highest-ever record for a month, set in April 2020, by 6.9 percent. It also betters the previous October record of 2.66 MMT, set in 2019, by 14.2 percent.
"CP's customers are managing strong and healthy supply chains to the ports, where new and expanded terminal capacity is facilitating very strong flows of grain," said Joan Hardy, CP Vice-President Sales and Marketing Grain and Fertilizers.

Moody's upgrades freight-rail industry outlook for 2021

Moody's Investors Service has upgraded its outlook for the North American rail industry from "negative" to "stable" as freight-rail volumes continue to recover from the pandemic-driven drop.
Revenue is expected to grow by 4.25% to 6% over the next 12 to 18 months, as freight volumes improve, Moody's Vice President Rene Lipsch said in the firm's Oct. 29 research report.

Volvo reveals ambitious electrification strategy

Volvo Trucks has announced it will offer its VNR Electric in the U.S. and Canada beginning Dec. 3.
The truck will enter production in early 2021 at Volvo's Dublin, Virginia, manufacturing plant.
"Volvo Trucks is committed to lead the commercial transport industry towards more sustainable solutions by advancing electromobility. We will continue to invest in and drive the development of this technology, both globally and right here in North America," said Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America.

NSF says drowsy driving is reaching epidemic proportions in 2020, with an estimated 100,000 police-reported crashes involving drowsy driving every year in the U.S. According to one report from the Governors Highway Safety Association, an estimated 5,000 people died in 2015 in crashes involving drowsy driving.

The air cargo sector has retained 92% of its business while almost 90% of passenger demand has evaporated because of travel fears and government restrictions.

The pace of recovery in air cargo volumes accelerated slightly in September. Industry-wide cargo tonnekilometres (CTKs) contracted by 8% year-on-year — a solid improvement on 12.1% decline in August. In month-on-month terms (blue line in Chart 1), CTKs picked up by 3.7%, which represents the fastest increase since May.

ICS: Every ship's efficiency rating will be made public

The 'A' to 'E' operational efficiency rating of every ship above 5,000 gt will be made fully public and updated on an annual basis, according to the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). This rating system could be adopted as soon as IMO's MEPC 75 meeting which starts on November 16, with further guidelines filled out at MEPC 76 next year.
"These ratings will be in the public domain and so visible to all," an ICS spokesperson commented.

ONE makes giant leap in quarterly profit

Ocean Network Express (ONE) reported Friday that its quarterly profit "significantly increased" — by a whopping 326%.
The Singapore-based container carrier said the profit for the second quarter of its 2020 fiscal year was $515 million, a $394 million leap from the $121 million profit in the same period last year. ONE’s fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 31.
