Nova Scotians still facing long waits for new knees and hips

Nova Scotians waiting for a new knee or hip are going to continue to wait much longer than the national average.
That's despite the Nova Scotia government spending an extra $6 million to do about 1,000 more procedures in the last two years.
When they were running to become government in the last election, the Liberals promised to bring down wait times for hip and knee surgeries to about six months, which is the national average.

Nova Scotia to pick health-care unions after 'inconclusive' arbitration

The Nova Scotia government says an "inconclusive" arbitration will force it to introduce legislation to assign unions to four provincial health-care bargaining units.
"We are disappointed," said Nova Scotia Health Minister Leo Glavine during Friday's news conference.
"He failed to deliver a decision in three of the four bargaining units... We will introduce legislation to do that."

Alberta misses long-term targets for surgery waits by a long shot

Alberta's provincial health body is poised to miss long-term wait time targets for bum knees, ailing shoulders and throbbing gall bladders as the clock runs out on an ambitious five-year action plan.
Titled "Becoming the Best," the plan was released November 2010 and set numerous targets including waits for non-emergency surgeries.
The overall goal was to reduce waits to 14 weeks for all surgeries by March 2015, but specific attention was paid to knee and hip replacements, coronary artery bypasses and cataract surgery.

7 more hospitals in Northeast go virtual

Seven more hospitals in northeastern Ontario have been added to the Virtual Critical Care Unit at Health Sciences North.
Emergency departments at Espanola Regional Hospital and Health Centre, Manitoulin Health Centre (Little Current and Mindemoya sites), Blind River District Health Centre, Chapleau Health Services, Mattawa Hospital and Lady Dunn Health Centre in Wawa have joined HSN's unit.

Study: Alberta short more than 3,300 hospital beds

After closing half its hospital beds in the mid-1990s, Alberta now needs to open up more than 3,300 beds to relieve the crush in emergency rooms, suggests a new study by a University of Alberta nursing professor.
With doctors warning about wait-times in emergency wards this winter, the province is opening 440 more long-term care beds to free up hospital beds for acute-care patients.
