2014 IAOPA World Assembly — COPA members invited to attend
COPA, as a founding member of the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations, participates in the bi-annual meeting of all AOPAs. Delegates, through resolutions adopted at the World Assembly, will shape the future priorities and efforts of IAOPA on the world stage. In addition to delegates — COPA will be represented by President Kevin Psutka — members of all affiliates are invited to participate as observers in the business of IAOPA and attend all social and touring events.More

Small Airplane Revitalization Act

Mid-November 2013, the U.S. Congress passed the Small Airplane Revitalization Act, and COPA asked if Transport Canada would follow, since Canada has a bilateral agreement in place with the U.S. to accept each other's certification, we imagine that when the FAA certifies under the revamped Part 23 regulations, Transport Canada will accept the FAA's new ruling.More

AOPA-Argentina becomes 73rd Affiliate
The Board of the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations has approved full membership for AOPA-Argentina, making the organization the 73rd IAOPA affiliate member. AOPA-Argentina is headquartered in Buenos Aires and is part of the non-profit Argentinean Association of Flight Instructors. AOPA-Argentina is committed to promoting a better understanding of the importance of general aviation to the public as a whole.More

Deafness doesn't ground aspiring Canada-born pilot

White House again pushes for aviation user fees
The White House fiscal year 2015 budget, yet again includes a $100-per-flight user fee for air traffic services, with exemptions for military, public and piston aircraft, as well as air ambulances, aircraft operating outside controlled airspace and Canada-to-Canada flights. According to the White House, "The revenues generated by the surcharge would be deposited into the Airport and Airway Trust Fund. The surcharge would be effective for flights beginning after Sept. 30, 2014."More

Enstrom launches economic 2-seat TH180 helicopter
Among several new helicopter introductions at Heli-Expo in Anaheim, Calif., was a new trainer from Enstrom Helicopter Corp. The bright orange helicopter the Menominee, Mich.-based company unveiled at its booth at the Anaheim Convention Center's show floor is a mockup of the two-seat TH180, a scaled down version of the three-seat 280FX, which was certified in the mid-1980s.More

Pipistrel switches engines for Panthera
Pipistrel's sleek Panthera retractable, announced two years ago, will soon have a six-cylinder Lycoming IO-540 rather than the IO-390 originally planned. The engine switch was forced because Lycoming won't be approving the IO-390 for mogas, according to Pipistrel. The IO-540 replacement, which Pipistrel says will improve short-field and high density altitude takeoff performance, will be approved for mogas use. More

FAA: Airworthiness directive ban necessary for old Cessna twins
The FAA says an airworthiness directive banning most early Cessna twins — except 337s — from flight into known icing is necessary because too many pilots were ignoring a mandatory service bulletin issued by the company in 1997 that says the same thing. Cessna sent out the bulletin after it became clear that even a little ice on almost 7,000 of the twins could seriously affect the slow-speed handling, resulting in a lot of hard landings.More

Hartzell composite 5-blade prop okayed on TBMs
Propeller maker Hartzell has gotten the FAA's approval for a new five-blade composite prop for existing Socata TBMs, from the 700 though the 850 series. We flew the new prop on a TBM 700 last month and were impressed by its smooth operation, great runway performance and impressive climb rates. More
