New federal guidelines that came into effect late last year mean the skies in Fort St. John are considered a "no-drone zone."
The city was declared a no-drone zone by Transport Canada on Dec. 15, meaning drone enthusiasts are not allowed to fly their machines within nine kilometres of an airport. This effectively puts off the entire city for use by recreational drones.
The guidelines also mean that smaller drones cannot fly within the city limits of Dawson Creek, as the city's limits are smaller than a nine-kilometres radius.

For 88-year-old former NFL and CFL head coach Bud Grant, two close calls with airline incidents is enough.
The first came in 1956 after he played in the Canadian Football League all-star game in Vancouver. For some unexplained reason, Grant changed his return flight home to Winnipeg at the 11th hour, avoiding the Trans-Canada Airline flight that crashed into the mountains near Chilliwack, British Columbia, and killed all 62 people on board.

The Canadian government is setting the stage for a multibillion-dollar training program for its military pilots that will see them receive instruction not just on basic skills but also on flying a new fighter jet and other future aircraft. The work is underway even though at this point the Liberal government doesn't know how it will proceed on buying a new aircraft to replace the aging CF-18s.

Fred Carmichael, a Gwich'in pilot and a true pioneer of Northern aviation, has been named to Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame.
"It feels good to be recognized like that," he said from his home in Inuvik. "I know there's a lot of others out there as deserving as I am, but I guess I'm the lucky one."
Carmichael's modesty belies a lifetime of hard work and accomplishment. In 1955, he became the first aboriginal person in the North to earn his pilot's licence.

The Port of Seattle has partnered with Alaska Airlines and Boeing to set an ambitious goal — powering all airline flights at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport with sustainable aviation biofuel. The partners have launched a $250,000 study to assess the costs and infrastructure they would need to deliver a biofuel/jet-fuel blend to all airline flights at Sea-Tac, as an interim step toward an all-biofuel system.

A Community Interest Company has created a new project to use aviation to help people in need and charities.
The Amélia Project supports people facing hardship, such as those fighting life-threatening conditions, or people who have suffered abuse, and their families. It does this by offering free flights, often to the places of their dreams or to visit family abroad. Although primarily focused on the U.K., The Amélia Project also helps projects abroad, such as in Myanmar, where the mortality rate of children with cancer means for every 100 sick children, only five survive.

According to author Paul Bertorelli: When it comes to the buying of gasoline, I may be the quintessential American in one sense and the atypical American in another. Regardless of what it costs, I'm going to buy it and do what I plan to do. I'm the last guy to care if one station has a price a nickel less than the one across the street. I rode motorcycles for 12,000 miles last year and the 15-cent savings on a fill up isn’t worth the risk of a left turn across busy lanes. On the other hand, cheaper gas doesn't make me drive, ride or fly more because fuel price just isn't a factor for me.

Two Greenville, South Carolina, pilots have joined forces to create a new group for minority pilots called Southeast Aviators.
While a relatively new pilot — he got his private ticket in April — Theron Burton has been fascinated with flight since he was a child. A ride in a neighbor's plane when he was just 12 ignited the fire for him to finally pursue his certificate last year.
But he noticed one thing at the airport: There weren't a lot of other minority pilots.
