Nearly 69 years after she first took flight, Newfoundland and Labrador's first female pilot is looking back on her accomplishments.
Phyllis Penney-Gaul — who is now 90 and living in British Columbia — broke the aviation gender barrier when she flew alone for the first time in Gander on July 15, 1947.
A display featuring her accomplishments is currently being featured at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum in Gander.

Applications for Neil Armstrong Scholarships are now being accepted. First place scholarship is valued at $7,000. Second place $3,000 and third place $2,000.
Application forms are available at the COPA office or online:

Applications must be sent to COPA's office in Ottawa, Ontario, by March 1, 2016.
The purpose of the scholarship fund is to honour one of Canada's foremost aviation members, and to provide flight training to worthy young persons who exemplify the fine character, optimism and love of adventure which were the characteristics of Neil J. Armstrong Qualified applicants shall be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants not less than 15 years of age on the date of application and not older than 21 years of age.

The head of the Air Canada Pilots Association wants Ottawa to put handheld lasers on its list of prohibited weapons.
That would allow police and border agencies to seize devices that are increasingly being used to target crew while in Canadian airspace, Capt. Ian Smith says.
Crew reported 590 so-called laser attacks to Transport Canada last year, an uptick of more than 17 per cent from 2014, federal data shows.

Garmin announced its ADS-B solution for G1000 avionics systems: The new GTX 335 and 345 transponders, which also will serve ADS-B OUT needs for a variety of Garmin products, including the G500/G600, GNS 430W/530W, GNS 480 and G3X Touch. The GTX is an all-in-one transponder and 1090-MHz ADS-B OUT unit; the GTX 345 offers dual-link (987 and 1090 MHz) ADS-B IN and the GTX 335 ADS-B OUT only. Both are also available as remote-mount transponders and fully integrate with G1000 systems.

General aviation manufacturing saw declines in the overall market worldwide as shipments for airplanes are reported down for 2015 over the previous year, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association reported. Airplane shipments declined 4.6 percent, from 2,376 units in 2014 to 2,267 units in 2015. GA airplane billings also are down 4 percent with $20.9 billion reported for 2015 compared to $21.8 billion in 2014.
