A new approach to approaches
By Kevin Psutka, COPA president and CEO
I hope that instrument rated pilots are investing some time in becoming familiar with the new format that is now rolling out across Canada, but I would like to emphasize the need to practice and use the Constant Descent Final Approach method for conducting non-precision approaches, especially if you have an IFR test flight or renewal coming up in the near future.

Council votes to close Nova Scotia airport this year
By Gary Dunfield
The local municipal council voted to close the Waterville, Nova Scotia, airport at the end of
September 2014. There is a fair amount of distress in the local aviation community as the nearest all-weather airport usable as a base for the 25-plus airplanes at the airport is 130 km away, and the nearest summer-only strip is about is 65 km. There are questions being asked as to whether this is legal and whether they can actually make such a decision.

What the FAA's rule change means for HEMS
By Mark Huber
The FAA's exhaustive new final operations rule for helicopter air ambulance, commercial helicopter and Part 91 helicopter operations was recently released. The rule imposes new equipment, procedure and requirement changes to existing Federal Aviation Regulations and is estimated to cost the industry $311 million over the next 10 years. That said, the rule does a pretty good job of balancing suggestions from the NTSB with industry stakeholders and should contribute to an improvement in rotorcraft safety.
Airworthiness directive on Cessna twins does not apply to all aircraft
FLYING
Since 1997, Cessna has been telling pilots of most of its light twins not to fly in known icing — but not all. Cessna issued a Mandatory Service Bulletin back then requiring that those twins not approved for flight in known icing have placards installed to that effect. It also advised an increase in approach speed should icing be encountered by accident.
