COPA responds to biased CBC report on ELTs

Members are reacting to a CBC report by Evan Solomon on what he perceives is a need for mandating 406 ELTs. The article is biased in the extreme and does not present all of the facts. Solomon was provided with the facts and background to this issue from COPA's perspective, including our advocacy for alternatives and for provisions to soften the financial burden of implementing mandatory requirements, such as elimination of the wasteful and unsafe requirement of sending the new ELTs out for recertification annually but Solomon chose not to report these COPA-recommended solutions to the problem.

COPA Board of Directors elections — Last chance to exercise your vote by April 4

Director elections for the COPA Board have been declared in Quebec and Southern Ontario. There are three candidates nominated for two positions in Quebec and seven candidates nominated for three positions in Southern Ontario.
As of March 31, the response so far is as follows:
- Quebec: 81 out of 2600 eligible voters have voted.
- Southern Ontario: 297 out of 5000 eligible voters have voted.

Political update — Toronto Island Airport

It looks like General Aviation may have a place at Toronto Billy Bishop Island Airport after all the attacks on it over the last few years. The motion that keeps GA in the negotiations was passed recently by the Toronto City Council.
Passenger totals at British Columbia airport keep climbing

British Columbia's Northwest Regional Airport continues to post record passenger numbers with February's total being the second highest on record.
The 18,092 figure was eclipsed only by December 2013's total of 18,182.
Combined with the January total, the figure to date for 2014 is 35,595.
That's more passenger traffic than generated at the airport for the first four months of 2011, the year passenger traffic at the airport began to climb and broach 120,000 for the first time for a calendar year.

Famous pilot speaks about Malaysian plane

The Malaysia Airlines mystery over the Indian Ocean has famous pilot Jeff Skiles drawing comparisons to the miracle on New York's Hudson River in 2009.
Skiles — the co-pilot of US Airways Flight 1549 — whose emergency was known as the "miracle on the Hudson," spoke to a group of young, aspiring aviators at Craig Airport in Jacksonville, Fla.
Continental to build former Cessna cabin class twin
FLYING
Continental Motors plans to bring the Reims-Cessna F406 Caravan II back into production after acquiring the type certificate, inventory and manufacturing rights for the twin from Reims Aviation of France.
Continental says it is partnering with ASI Innovation in France on the unpressurized, 14-passenger twin — first introduced by Reims Aviation in 1983. Once production resumes, buyers can choose to equip their F406 with either Pratt & Whitney PT6s or a Continental Motors geared, FADEC and diesel engines.

The hero passenger who landed a plane after his pilot fell unconscious

The sun was setting on a glorious autumn day as the tiny aircraft headed for home.
On board the Cessna Skyhawk were John Wildey — a 77-year-old grandfather — and the pilot, a long-standing friend. Their regular joyrides in the skies above Lincolnshire were a highlight for Wildey.
Although he had never piloted an aircraft he flew regularly with others on days out, often landing at an airfield for lunch. He was sitting alongside the pilot when his friend became ill.

Boyhood plane ride leads to dodging enemy fire as WWII cargo pilot

At age 12, when Robert F. Rohde was a Boy Scout, he was at a troop meeting in Riverside, N.Y., carving an airplane out of a block of wood when Scoutmaster Francis Ford walked up to him and asked if he'd like to go up in an airplane.
"I nearly fell over when he asked. I said, 'Yes!' He was a pilot, and he took me up in a Piper Cub at the airport in Cheektowaga," the 91-year-old Rohde recalls as if it were yesterday. "I just loved it, and said I wanted to be a pilot."
