Dave McElroy and Russ Airey were part of a six-plane crew that flew more than 9,500 kilometres across the Canadian Arctic and Alaskan wilderness last year, and that experience left Airey wanting more.
Soon after the journey ended, Airey recalls sending McElroy an email with a simple question at its core: "What are we doing next?"
"He ignored me for a little while and he comes back and he said, 'Well, I'm thinking about going around South America,'" said Airey, a long-time general aviation pilot and retired Chrysler manager who lives in Windsor, Ontario.

A small plane made an emergency landing against traffic on an interstate, struck a guardrail and came to rest nose-down, police said. One vehicle had to serve to avoid the plane, but no motorists were injured, and the two people aboard the plane suffered only minor injuries.
The plane, piloted by John Gayley, of Bowdoin, landed in the southbound lane of Interstate 295 in Bowdoinham. It then crashed into a guardrail off the breakdown lane.

Transport Canada is defending a recent decision to loosen its regulations for pilots, despite criticism that the nation is headed for a disastrous aviation accident.
The department says it recently changed its flying program to allow for more training on flight simulators, and has not compromised safety in the process. It says that these flight simulators can result in better training for licensed pilots than time flying an actual aircraft.

Tens of thousands of general aviation pilots are already enjoying added safety benefits, enhanced situational awareness and more peace of mind from Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) long before the 2020 deadline to equip.
To encourage more aircraft owners to equip soon and avoid long waits for installation at repair shops as the deadline nears, the FAA is offering — for a limited time — a $500 rebate for completed ADS-B installations in fixed-wing, single-engine piston aircraft.

With the onset of warmer weather, pilots face the increased risk of encountering thunderstorms.
Although more common in the warmer months, thunderstorms can occur even in the winter, especially in the southern states. It's estimated that 100,000 thunderstorms occur in the U.S. each year. Some locations in southwest Florida have 100 storms a year, but thunderstorms do occur in all 50 states.
Thunderstorms are most common in the late afternoon, but can occur at any time of the day.
