For the first time a tie exists between two candidates for one of two director positions in a region represented by two directors. In the Maritimes, Brian Chappell was re-elected as one of the two directors. An equal number of votes were received by candidates John Navaux and Brian Pound for the other director position. So a tie breaking by- election has been called. Beginning April 18, 2016, until the end of the day May 16, 2016 eligible Maritime members can vote again.

Word from Montreal is that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) — that august repository of flying knowledge and global winged harmony — is working to bring sleep standards for helicopter pilots in line for guidelines long since established for their fixed-wing brethren. The move is seen as particularly exigent in light of the looming and long-forecasted helicopter pilot shortage. The helicopter "guidelines" should be ready by 2018.

Transport Canada, in a continuing partnership to promote safety in the aviation industry, please note this important information:
In a recent event, an amateur-built Pipistrel Virus SW experienced a severe vibration while cruising at approximately 1600 feet above ground level. The pilot reduced the engine power and the vibration was reduced. The pilot steered the aircraft towards an abandoned aerodrome, shut down the engine and deployed the ballistic parachute. The aircraft descended to the Aerodrome and landed upright on the wheels.
The examination of the aircraft revealed that one blade of the propeller, manufactured by Woodcomp, model SR3000, had detached. The remaining propeller blade, hub, and blade root of the detached blade were sent to the TSB Laboratory for further analysis.

With a goal of "perpetual flight," Daniel Preston and a small group of engineers and professors are working to design an unmanned, autonomous, solar-powered electric airplane that can achieve that milestone of staying aloft around the clock...even during the longest, darkest night of the year.
And why, you might ask, would you need such a plane?

Ten aviation advocacy groups submitted a letter to U.S. senators, asking them to oppose any changes in the FAA Reauthorization Act that would allow local and state governments to create their own rules about drones. Allowing that kind of "patchwork" of laws could "erode, rather than enhance, air safety," the letter says. It also has a "strong potential to create confusion and compliance burdens."

Her name was Maddie, she was 11 years old, and she had never been in a small plane before. Dark-haired and dark-eyed, smaller and shyer than her giggling friends, Maddie had surprised me by shooting her hand skyward when I asked who wanted to sit up front. "Okay, but just so you know, you might have to fly the plane for a bit," I cautioned with a wink. Maddie nodded and smiled; apparently she’d been hoping for just such an opportunity.

In response to our call for seaplane stories, Eric Ziegler sent us this one: "When I was a pre-pilot with about eight hours of land time, my wife and I visited her brother, who lived in Thibadoux, Louisiana. He worked for the gas pipeline company there, and frequently inspected small concrete data islands in the swamp. He invited me along for such a trip in a float C-180. Our first takeoff exhilarated me — so smooth."

Advocates converged on Washington this week to push for passage of the Safe Skies Act, which would extend to cargo pilots the same rest requirements mandated for pilots who fly with passengers. "This is not a partisan issue, it's a science-based, common-sense issue," said Chesley Sullenberger, who has been advocating for the act, at a news conference.
