Ontario election issue — Taxes on aviation

When I wrote a letter to Ontario Premier Wynne immediately after the budget was released, and followed up with a request for Ontario members to contact their MPPs, an election had not been called. Now that one is in progress, I contacted the three major parties — Liberal, PC, NDP — for their position on the issue of increasing the tax on aviation gasoline and whether or not they will do anything to improve the airport infrastructure.

Firing up in the skies

Fire season is now well underway, which means the water bombers are now stationed at the Air Tanker Base west of the Lac La Biche Airport in Alberta, Canada, for the summer.
Six amphibious airplanes are parked on the tarmac at the base, ready to take to the skies in the event of a wildfire.
When they're not bringing air superiority to bear, the pilots are still "on alert," ready to leave inside of an hour or within five minutes, depending on the level of risk for wildfires in the area.

Nova Scotia air cadets soar at 72nd annual ceremonial review

Young cadets contemplating a career in the Canadian Air Force can't do much better than to take advice from Amherst, Nova Scotia, resident Jim Kerr.
"A career in the military, specifically a career in the Canadian Air Force, could be one of those career paths worth looking into. I've certainly have no regrets," said Kerr, who was the reviewing officer at the 154 Amherst Anson Royal Air Cadets 72nd Annual Ceremonial Review at the Amherst Armouries.

Region of Waterloo International Airport expansion seems unlikely to fly

Faced with the loss of Bearskin Airlines flights to Ottawa and deafening complaints about airport noise, expansion of the Region of Waterloo International Airport is looking like it won't fly.
Coun. Sean Strickland said a master plan committee, tasked with deciding the airport's future, plans to recommend there be no expansion at this time.
"I think the departure of Bearskin was a game changer," Strickland said.
Noise concerns and the unused capacity at the airport are also driving the recommendations to cancel expansion, he said.

Engine change causes slight delay for Flaris LAR 1 VLJ

The Flaris LAR 1, the five-seat, single-engine, very light jet unveiled by Podgórzyn, Poland-based Flaris last June at the Paris Air Show, has recently started low-speed taxi tests, but its maiden flight has slipped again. The airplane was expected to have flown by the end of last year, but first flight was pushed into the first half of this year in December. Now, the all-composite LAR 1 is expected to fly "this summer."

Aviation data cloud on the horizon

The prospect of an aviation cloud for real-time monitoring of flight data gained traction at a two-day summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, organized by the U.N. agency in charge of global telecommunications in the wake of the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.
Calls issued earlier this year at the International Telecommunication Union's conference on global telecoms development for real-time tracking of commercial aircraft prompted industry leaders and experts to convene to explore how technology could provide such solutions.

5-seat Diamond DA-62 twin revealed
FLYING
Diamond Aircraft has drawn back the veil of secrecy surrounding its latest project, releasing the first artist renderings, photos and a few select details of the new five-seat DA-62 twin.
Under development at Diamond's home base in Austria, the DA-62 is similar in appearance to the DA-52 prototype that first flew in 2012. Although the tweaked new model is shown as having a third window toward the rear of the cabin and a slightly redesigned horizontal stabilizer.
Prince William to take air ambulance job

He can live like a king, but Prince William — who usually goes by the Duke of Cambridge — would apparently rather be an HEMS pilot. The flying bug is apparently still biting the former military search and rescue helicopter pilot, and the people who speak for him are all but confirming the reports. The prince is likely to join the East Anglian air ambulance, which serves the area of his family's home in Norfolk, U.K.
