The air cadet program is for young adults 12 to 18 to get the opportunity to take part in flying, gliding and carry out studies in aerospace while developing good leadership, citizenship and physical fitness.
"I thought when I first started here I would fail," said an emotional LaPlante back in 2013. "Now that I am here I am proud to wear this uniform, I am proud to be an air cadet. With the training I receive I plan on becoming a pilot in the military, serving my country the way I would like. If you cut this squadron I won't have that chance."

A Canadian performer was killed in the crash of his T-28 Trojan at an Alberta airshow. Bruce Evans, of Calgary, died when the aircraft apparently failed to pull out of a loop while performing at the Cold Lake Air Show, about 100 miles east of Edmonton. "It looked like he was attempting a loop and he came in a little too low," newspaper editor Peter Lozinski told CTV News. "There wasn't a fireball but a big puff of debris went up into the air."

Seventeen minutes without a heartbeat set Jim Poling off in a new and life-fulfilling direction.
"They say you can only survive 19 minutes with a shut-down heart, so it was a close call," Jim related recently. "Even so, a stroke suffered on the operating table left me blind in one eye."
The Canadian author had been living on borrowed time for more than 40 years — since the day when, as a 15-year-old, he'd been diagnosed with a congenital heart problem.

We'll soon see if the new FAA drone rules — the much heralded Part 107 — will bring some sky sanity when they take effect Aug. 29. Doris Bierly has had a plane ride, so she doesn't need to take another one.
That's what the Mennonite Village, Oregon, resident said after taking her first-ever ride in Craig Ulrich's Cessna 172 Saturday to mark her 100th birthday.
Resting in her tidy home at the village after the flight, she said she's just taking it easy after such a big morning; the flight took her over Brownsville, where she got to take a look at the place she was born, the butte she would climb as a child and a young woman, and the farm she and her husband bought in 1942 for $15,000.

Dozens of kids across the area spent Saturday morning learning what it's like to be a pilot. But they weren't learning from the ground — they were learning up in the sky.
