Lanc begins 2nd leg of journey to UK

Hamilton's Lancaster has taken off from Goose Bay, Newfoundland Labrador, for a 7.5 hour flight to Iceland for the second leg of its epic journey to England.
Matthew Munson, who paid for one of eight seats on the flight, tweeted at 9:30 a.m. that the plane had safely taken off.
The bomber is heading to the U.K. to take part in six weeks of air shows, many of which will also feature the world's only other airworthy Lancaster, owned by the Royal Air Force.

Alberta resident helps restore Cold War-era fighter jet

Cochrane, Alberta, resident Col. Gerry Morrison and Calgarian Cpl. Gary Watson are hoping to preserve some of the Canadian history from the Cold War by rebuilding a Royal Canadian Air Force jet fighter, the CF-104 Starfighter at the Springbank Airport.
"We're restoring it to the classic mid-'60s look, right down to the classic Maple Leaf emblem," Morrison said. "It won't be fully operational, but it gives Canadians a chance to see it as it would have been."
New ultra-thin film may protect pilots from laser beams

A University of Moncton physicist is hoping a new ultra-thin film, that can be applied to the windshield of commercial airplanes, may keep the skies safer by blocking laser beams that are being aimed at cockpits.
According to the FBI, incidents of people aiming their lasers into airplane cockpits has risen by more than 1,000 percent since 2005.
Pandurang Ashrit, a physicist and the director of the Thin Films and Photonics Research Group at the University of Moncton, specializes in working with super-thin materials.

Lead is still a threat

The amount of lead churned into the air by cars and factories has declined by more than 90 percent since the 1970s. Average concentrations of the toxic metal in children have plummeted almost as dramatically.
But one industry stubbornly remains a hold-out in the decades-long push for a lead-free America. Piston-engined aircraft, which take off from airports large and small in every state, still run on leaded aviation fuel known as avgas.
Canada's 1st female commercial airline pilot stamped into history

Canada's first female commercial airline pilot was recognized recently with a commemorative stamp featuring her image.
Rosella Bjornson, who grew up on an Alberta farm between Champion and Carmangay and graduated from County Central High School, was presented July 13 with the stamp, which includes a picture of her when she first started flying commercially in 1973 and another when she became a captain in 1990.
In an interview, Bjornson modestly said she didn't feel different about being recognized on the stamp, but added she was "very honoured."
Continental introduces 310 hp diesel V6
FLYING
Continuing the rapid trend toward diesel power in light airplanes, Continental Motors launched the V6 CD 300, a 310 horsepower jet-A-burning engine that's due to hit the market in about two years.
Continental has also dropped the Centurion name from its diesel line, which it acquired as part of its purchase of Thielert in Germany a year ago.

However, like with most things, reality is very different. For the past nine years, I have spent my time working as an FAA-certified and licensed Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic, or A&P. A&Ps are the lifeblood of civil aviation in the U.S.
In short, we are tasked with ensuring that all aircraft in the US are maintained in an airworthy and safe manor.

Earning his wings under the hood

Dan Wilson's weeks are almost always split in two. For three days, Wilson works in a World War II-era hangar at Katama Airfield in Edgartown, Massachusetts. For another three days, he works out of a more modern hangar at the Martha's Vineyard Airport. Sundays, he takes off, so to speak. A mechanic by trade but a pilot by passion, Wilson can be found roaming the skies when he's not busy taking a wrench to a faulty airplane engine or completing annual inspections.

A century ago, 1 man changed aviation

As first lady Ellen Axson Wilson's life was slipping away inside the White House Aug. 6, 1914, due to the ravaging effects of kidney disease, DeLloyd Thompson was more than 1,000 miles away, donning a sheepskin suit in Overland Park, Kansas.
Cold-weather apparel of that variety would, in most circumstances, have been unbearable and unnecessary on a typical summer's day in the community just outside Kansas City. But Thompson wouldn't long be on the ground and bearing the brunt of the August sun.
