COPA, AOPA advocate for workable GA border crossing system

COPA reported in an April edition of eFlight that the Canada Border Services Agency's Interactive Advance Passenger Information (IAPI) is scheduled to be launched by October 2015 and it will require that all GA pilots provide advance information to Canadian authorities prior to flying to Canada. This is in addition to what is already in place with CANPASS.
As members of a working group assisting the CBSA in the development of the new process, COPA and AOPA are advocating for elimination of duplication between the U.S. eAPIS system and the proposed Canadian system by using a single portal/window for data entry that would be shared between U.S. and Canadian authorities. CBSA staff are having difficulty reconciling the Canadian Privacy Act requirements and Sovereignty issues so COPA and AOPA have signed a joint letter requesting the President of CBSA, Luc Portelance, take action in favour of our proposal and work out whatever bureaucratic barriers there may be to a joint data entry solution.

Float plane takeoff under Ottawa bridge prompts investigation

A float plane pilot's flight under a bridge connecting Ottawa and Gatineau left concerned pilots and frightened boaters in its wake recently.
Instructors at the Ottawa Flying Club said taking off under a bridge isn't technically illegal, but is reckless.
Canadian aviation regulations say pilots are supposed to stay 500 feet away from people and structures except when taking off and landing.
Questions continue about lithium batteries

New rules recently have addressed the safety of shipping lithium batteries in air cargo, but a recent newspaper story raised questions about their use in electronic devices in the cockpit of passenger airplanes. "Because many airlines are replacing paper charts with laptops and tablet computers, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration conducted tests on what would happen if one of their rechargeable lithium-ion battery cells ignited," according to news report.

Pilots undoubtedly know what Fly-By-Wire is: An aircraft system whereby a pilot makes control inputs that are interpreted and governed by a computer that sends electronic commands to actuators that manipulate things on a helicopter like the main rotor pitch, camber and tailrotor. FBW replaces traditional mechanical linkages and provides more precise aircraft control. It also keeps pilots from flying their aircraft “outside the envelope” into potentially unstable and dangerous situations. Old stick-and-rudder guys dismiss FBW as a “rate limiter” on the controls, but it is so much more than that.
