IAOPA files opposition to ICAO proposal on upset training
International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Association
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has released a letter to member states encouraging comments on a proposal that will add a requirement for upset prevention and recovery training as part of the commercial pilot license. This action was taken following events involving commercial air transport airplanes which led to an examination of current training practices of several organizations. In its recommendations, ICAO is adding a requirement for upset recovery training to be included in the curriculum for the commercial pilot’s license and the multi-crew license level that must be accomplished in an aircraft, training that is proposed at the ATP level can be conducted in an approved simulator device.

Report: Glare caused pilot to crash float plane

A float plane crashed into a steep hillside as it climbed out of the Okanagan Valley near Peachland, British Columbia, killing all three people on board, because the pilot's vision was likely obscured by the sun's glare, the Transportation Safety Board said.
The TSB released a report that said the privately owned de Havilland Beaver was facing the sun, and the glare probably prevented the pilot from seeing the looming treetops after the plane took off from Okanagan Lake on May 13, 2012.
STARS airlifts boy to hospital in Manitoba after parade float injury

A young Manitoba boy has been airlifted to hospital in Winnipeg after officials say he was injured by a parade float.
Const. Rick Wolfe with the Winkler Police Service says the boy was between five and 10 years old and had been part of the float crew at the annual Winkler Heritage Festival parade.
Wolfe says the boy was from the Winkler area and was listed in stable condition after the incident.

Vintage Wings of Canada planes, as part of the Yellow Wings Youth Leadership Initiative, paid a visit to the CFB Greenwood airport in Nova Scotia.
It's a program designed to encourage youth to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering and math.
Greenwood was the final stop for the program which visited eight other regions across the country throughout the summer.

New commander at 8 Wing CFB Trenton

Colonel David Lowthian assumed command of 8 Wing Trenton from Col. Sean Friday in a ceremony held at CFB Trenton in Ontario.
Major-General Pierre St-Amand, Commander of 1 Canadian Air Division and the Canadian NORAD Region, presided over the ceremony.
"As the hub of air mobility operations in Canada, 8 Wing Trenton has been a very busy air base with its wide array of capabilities from delivering supplies to the high Arctic to airlifting troops, equipment and humanitarian loads worldwide," said Maj.-Gen. St-Amand. "The successful air mobility operations under Col. Friday's command, both in Canada and abroad, have confirmed 8 Wing's important role in the Royal Canadian Air Force. I'm confident that Col. Friday's successes will be continued with the new leadership of Col. Lowthian."

Cadet gets his wings

Cadet Jake Schuszter of Campbell River is spending part of his summer at the regional gliding school on the Air Cadet Glider Pilot Scholarship Course.
Schuszter is one of 44 Air Cadets selected from across British Columbia for the opportunity to pursue their Transport Canada glider pilot license. He is flying the Schweizer 2-33A gliders, which are owned by the BC Provincial Committee of the Air Cadet League of Canada.

Air cadets can fly before they can drive

The majority of the cadets who graduated from the Central Region Gliding School can't drive a car, but they can now fly a glider.
Lt.-Col. Jason Stark, the former Commanding Officer of 429 (Transport) Squadron, pointed out that irony to the parents and relatives of the graduates, adding there's no better feeling than flying solo for the first time and especially getting that true sense of flying only available in a glider.

Teen pilot aims for round-the-world record

An Australian teenager hoping to earn a place in the aviation record books stopped in Newfoundland and Labrador, midway through his mission to fly solo around the world.
Ryan Campbell, 19, set out from Australia on June 30, just a day after 21-year-old Californian Jack Wiegand became the youngest person to fly solo around the world.
"It's a crazy, out-there dream that I didn't think was achievable and for a whole number of reasons," Campbell told CBC News on the airstrip at Happy Valley-Goose Bay, where he stopped for a layover.
