Gerry Julian has been flying planes since 1987. He is the proud owner of his fifth airplane, a Vans RV-6A airplane, which is a kit-built sport plane built in Houston, Texas, that can go up to 200 miles per hour. "This airplane is so much more challenging and fun to fly than anything I've had in the past," said Julian. "In the past 25 years I've been flying I've never enjoyed flying as much as I have since I got this plane."

The Can Am Aerobatic competition is being held Aug. 24-26, at the Saugeen Municipal Airport (Hanover, Ont.) CYHS. The aircraft will rehearse their routines on Friday the 24; fly the prescribed and freestyle routines on Saturday and will fly finals on Sunday. Everyone is welcome to come and watch or even better enter the contest to fly.

The Canadian Forces is planning to spend $755 million on a new fleet of aircraft for its Snowbirds aerobatics team, according to documents obtained by the Citizen. The Snowbirds will need new planes by 2020 and the Royal Canadian Air Force is now examining various options.

A group trying to solve the mystery surrounding famed aviator Amelia Earhart is reporting encouraging results from its latest expedition to the central Pacific. Ric Gillespie, head of the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, says high-resolution video taken in July shows what appears to be a debris field of man-made objects in the waters off an atoll that is part of the republic of Kiribati.

In a major search and rescue mission, they are one of the first calls the Air Force makes. Members of Civil Air Rescue Emergency Service (CARES) are always on standby to take to the air and help. "We are trained and ready to step in to assist the military personnel during a major search," said Niagara CARES vice-president Mike Stewart. The group of local volunteers marked 35 years of service Saturday with Airport Fest 2012 at the Niagara District Airport.

The Cold Lake Air Force Museum, located at 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alberta, has received the original painting and first print of 'Me and My Shadow,' donated by acclaimed aviation artist, Charles Kadin. "For [Mr. Kadin] to be able to come here...it's an outstanding opportunity for the Air Force, for 4 Wing, as well as for Mr. Kadin," said acting 4 Wing commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Daniel McLeod. "This museum...will have both past and more modern history, such as the painting Mr. Kadin provided for us, for future generations to look at."

British Columbia Day's Open House at the B.C. Aviation Museum in Pat Bay was a day to remember. The Mill Bay ferry ride, something I've not done in years, not only shortened the driving and avoided the holiday weekend traffic, but added to our enjoyment. Proving that being a tourist in one's own part of the world really does have something going for it.
