According to author Luc Rinaldi: I love flying. There's something about the moment a plane's wheels leave the ground. About the view during a descent. Hell, even slow-moving security lines and overpriced airport food get me giddy. Maybe it's genetic: when I was in my teens, my mom got her pilot's license and took my dad, brothers and I for day trips around southern Ontario in a four-seat Cessna.

RV8 wheel/skis leaving for Hobart, Tasmania this week, where Miguel Gordillo will be installing them on his highly modified RV8 for his flight over Antarctica. http://www.skypolaris.org/
The month of August became a marathon for Patrick, to deliver the skis on time, working every evening and weekends to build a set of custom built RV8 wheel/skis for this trip.
Miguel will be departing Madrid, Spain in his RV8 for Tasmania. Then the first leg of this flight is across the Indian Ocean from Hobart, Tasmania to Italy’s Zucchelli Station in Antarctica, a grueling 14 hours non-stop flight, his alternate is France’s Dumont D’Urville Station, a tiny rocky island located only 10 hours away. His RV has a total of 757 liters (200 US Gal) of fuel and estimates up to 20 hours of endurance.
Miguel is carrying COPA Wings decal and will stick them on the bulletin boards of each Antarctic Station he lands during this trip.
Any COPA members planning to visit Antarctica? Look for the COPA Wings decal!
Although Miguel will be landing in Antarctica, it will be Canadian skis that will touch down first on the Continent!!

The producers of "Sully," the movie based on the ditching of Flight 1549 in the Hudson River in 2009, are apparently so confident of its authenticity they've invited a theater full of pilots to a preview screening, two days before it opens to general audiences. Warner Bros. has given free tickets to hundreds of pilots in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, for the invitation-only preview. "We're all really looking forward to seeing it. It will be a lot of fun swapping notes," said Jill Oakes, the Winnipeg pilot who suggested the idea to Warner Bros.

The fifth Brazil-Canada MRO Technology Seminar, and first Canada-Latin America MRO Technology Seminar, was held at the LABACE show this week. Delayed by rain, it began with Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner Louis-Pierre Edmond, in Portuguese, offering "thanks to those who maintain the safety of our aircraft and carry us and our families." He recalled the long aviation relationship between Canada and Brazil, and then gave numbers on the importance of the MRO industry to Canada–some $4 billion a year in revenue and more tan 17,000 jobs for engineers.

A new bush plane, once featured in an Academy Award-nominated short film, will arrive at the local bush plane museum — by car.
The MacGregor MG65 single-seat bi-plane is being donated by its American owner, driving from New England to the Sault atop a two-door sedan.
"It's a small plane on a small car, with the wings on a trailer behind it," said Todd Fleet, curator at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre.
The 28-foot-long bi-plane is expected to arrive some time tomorrow.

Speed is sexy, it's true. So, go ahead, admit it. When you read all of those pilot reports, you skim them, looking for the cruise speed, then go back and read the rest. It's a natural thing. We all love the idea of going fast. But how fast is fast? And is there such a thing as fast enough?

A free lunch and free airplane rides helped draw hundreds of people to the Willmar airport for the 10th anniversary celebration of the airport's still relatively new location and facilities.
Many of the guests were Willmar residents who had never been to the new airport in their backyard, said Patrick Curry, chairman of the Willmar Airport Commission.
"I'm so pleased that these people came out here from Willmar today," Curry said. "I'm totally pleased. Thrilled."
