ForeFlight
ForeFlight's flight plan filing capabilities recently got a big boost with support for intra-Canada VFR flight plans.
VFR flight plans for routes within Canada are now sent directly to Nav Canada, allowing customers to both plan and file Canadian VFR flights entirely within ForeFlight Mobile or via the ForeFlight website. ForeFlight also supports cross-border VFR flight plans from the U.S. to Canada and all IFR flight plans within or between the U.S. and Canada, in either direction.

A married couple in their 70s had never really flown in a small airplane before, next thing you know they are flying out of St. Columban, bound for the state of Alaska in a 182 single engine Cessna.

Not many of us would look at an airport runway and see it as a perfect building site, but for pilot Brad Welch and his partner, Alex Suarex, this was the ideal location for their home. The couple asked architect Maurice Patten to help them realize their dream. Patten created a space for living and entertaining, where travellers and friends passing through Australia's Mudgee wine region, a three-and-a-half-hour drive northwest of Sydney, often come to watch the planes come and go.

There's old school. And then there's flight school.
You can learn flight theory from a teacher's lessons about lift, drag and G force. Or you can gape in awe as a gravity-defying fighter jet screams by overhead.
Recently, about 40 pupils from Lord Nelson elementary school put theory into practice during a day-long visit to London, Ontario's Jet Aircraft Museum.
"It's awesome. You get to see actual planes and see the crew," said Ethan Hughes, 12, who'd never been in a plane before.

There aren't too many teenagers that can just hop in a plane by themselves and take to the skies, but Brianna Ricketts can.
While the 17-year-old Gander resident doesn't have her driver's licence yet, she completed the power pilot program over the summer and earned her wings.
Brianna obtained her glider licence last year and felt that getting a power pilot licence was the next step in her training.

Good news. The past July — typically the worst month of the year for helicopter accidents — was the second-safest on record in 30 years, and the overall accident rate for the first six months of the year is trending down. Good work, everyone. But don't break out the champagne just yet. The fatal accident rate is showing a mild uptick, jumping from 0.52 per 100,000 flight hours for all of 2015 to 0.54 year to date according to data from the U.S. Helicopter Safety Team.

Boeing unveiled its new military single-engine T-X airplane, the latest contender in the contest to supply the Air Force with its next-generation pilot trainer. Boeing has two production T-X aircraft it designed and built with Sweden’s Saab as demonstration models, featuring a twin-tail design and modern avionics made to replace the Air Force’s aging T-38 training fleet. "Our T-X is real, ready and the right choice for training pilots for generations to come,” Boeing said in an announcement.

Ratings Man is a ratings collector. No matter how many ratings or hours anyone has, he has more. Many of us go after the more common upgrades to our private pilot certificates, such as an instrument rating or high-performance and complex aircraft endorsements. Out in the wild blue yonder, we put these skills to good use. But some argue it's expensive to collect signatures in our logbooks for stuff we'll rarely — or never — use.
