If you're a doubter who still believe that diesels may be okay for trucks and buses but not for cars, how do you feel about diesel-powered aircraft? Cessna has announced it's dropping the turbocharged gasoline piston engine from its popular 182 Skylane and replacing it with a four-cylinder diesel. Cessna says the diesel, from the French company SMA, is 42 per cent more fuel-efficient than the gasoline engine, more reliable and quieter, too.

Bombardier is expected to post soft third-quarter results, prompting at least one analyst to downgrade his rating for the plane and train manufacturer and trim his share target price. Analysts on average expect that the Montreal-based plane and train manufacturer will earn 11 cents per share in adjusted profits on $4.68 billion of revenues when results are revealed.

A new proposal by a government-led study group to toughen the rules for combating pilot fatigue is facing stiff opposition from some industry players. Transport Canada's aviation regulatory advisory council will convene next week to review proposals by its pilot fatigue management working group to modernize Canada's regulations.

Global air passenger traffic growth has slowed considerably, and rose by just 4.1 per cent year-on-year in September, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said. Global air cargo demand meanwhile grew just 0.6 per cent in September compared with the same month in 2011, the Geneva-based organisation said in a statement.
