New ownership for Cooking Lake Airport

The facility, located 20 kilometres east of Edmonton, has been sold by the Edmonton Regional Airports Authority to the Cooking Lake Airport Condominium Association. "For the past 86 years, the Cooking Lake Airport has been the starting point of some of the greatest adventures in Canadian aviation history," said Diane Trenn, vice-president of operations for the airport authority. "Today, the airport is primarily a home base for recreational aircraft and small commercial operators. The time is now right for those aircraft and hangar owners to take over the stewardship of this historic airport and chart its course for future generations of pilots."

Winnipeg's StandardAero received this year's Canadian American Business Achievement Award with GE Aviation of Cincinnati for their collaboration in designing and building the GE Aviation Aircraft Engine Testing, Research and Development Centre in Winnipeg. The award was handed out earlier in Ottawa, at an event attended by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The Muskoka Airport is looking at increasing their landing and parking fees for jets next year to generate more revenue.
At a planning and economic development meeting on Nov. 15, Mark Stirling, airport manager, presented the committee with the proposed increases, which he said happens every three years.

WestJet anticipates lower fares for new regional carrier

WestJet said they expect to capture the regional airline market by offering 'dramatically' lower fares than their competitor. WestJet CEO Greg Saretsky told the Canadian Club in Montreal earlier this week that he will 'liberate Canadians' from the high cost of air travel when they roll out their regional airline, WestJet Encore, early next year.

China's airport construction takes off

As the global aviation industry is being hit by a downturn due to flagging tourist demand, China is seeing an airport construction boom driven by local governments. Last month, Hunan province said it planned to build 21 general aviation airports in the next 18 years. Earlier, neighboring Hubei province also said it would build seven commercial airports and two general aviation airports in the next 18 years.

Bombardier Aerospace is refuting a claim by Estonian Air's new CEO that its three CRJ900s are uncompetitive for its routes and that their purchase two years ago was a mistake. Published reports in Europe say chief executive Jan Palmer would prefer to get rid of the Bombardier planes but doing so is 'currently nearly impossible' because it can't find anyone to take over their long-term leases.
