Unique transponder code for glider operations in Canada
|
   |
COPA
Transport Canada confirms support for a unique transponder code for glider operations in Canada. This would not mean that transponders would be mandatory for gliders, it would only mean that, in the case where a glider has a transponder, they should use a code of 1202. This would make it easier for air traffic controllers to differentiate between gliders and powered aircraft which would help facilitate safe separation.
Gliders operate with unique flight and maneuvering limitations. They may go from essentially stationary ATS surveillance contacts while thermaling to moving targets very quickly. They can also be expected to make sudden changes in flight direction to find lift and cannot hold altitude in a response to an ATC request. Gliders also tend to be very difficult to see visually and have been involved in near-miss incidents and mid-air collisions with powered aircraft.
For these reasons it is important for air traffic controllers to differentiate between gliders and powered aircraft in order to facilitate safe separation. This unique code is in response to individual requests from glider operators and pilots and is fully supported by the Soaring Association of Canada and COPA. It also matches the guidance promulgated by the FAA in 2012.
Although not currently mandated, glider owners and pilots are encouraged to operate with a transponder on board so they may fully benefit from the safety advantages that having a discreet transponder code will offer.
You can anticipate this will take effect with an AIC in the February time-frame, and it will be included in the next edition of the AIM, March 30th.

Plane & Pilot
Defining winter by the severity of cold weather on the North American continent can be a difficult task. In most years, anything south of a line through Atlanta, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Santa Fe and Los Angeles has a good chance of a modest winter. Any location above 35 degrees north latitude can reasonably expect colder conditions. In this case, we're not talking about the extremes of frigid temperatures, say, colder than -30 degrees F. It's possible to operate in far more severe conditions — Alaskan bush pilots do it all the time — but we're not considering those instances for the moment.

Aeronautical decision-making (ADM) is essentially the mental process of gathering and evaluating information pertinent to a flight; listing the options and their attendant risks; and then choosing the best alternatives. It is an iterative process due to the nature of the changing variables inherent in flight.
ADM is often a relatively simple and subliminal process if we are out for that $100 hamburger on a beautiful Saturday morning. However, when you have a long cross-country and weather ahead of you (and some commitments on the other end), it takes on a far greater significance.

Before the flight in the experimental Thorp T-18, the pilot unbolted and rebolted the pilot's seat from its middle position to the forward position.
He did not check to see if the flight control stick movement would be restricted in this new configuration.
During the takeoff roll, the plane would not rotate when he moved the flight control stick aft.

John Glenn, a lifelong pilot and public figure who is best known as the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth, died recently at 95. The retired military airman and four-term U.S. senator was hospitalized in Columbus, Ohio, in declining health. Glenn, a native of Cambridge in eastern Ohio, is the state's "ultimate hometown hero, and his passing today is an occasion for all of us to grieve," Ohio Gov.

Updated software for the Lynx NGT-9000 series of ADS-B transponders produced by L-3 Communications offers Stormscope compatibility, improved terrain and traffic collision warnings via aural alerts, and, for larger GA aircraft, dual transponder configurations. Originally released in 2015, the Lynx transponders provide access to ADS-B In data directly from a touchscreen interface on the panel mount transponder — an important feature for pilots wanting traffic and weather in the cockpit, but whose aircraft are not equipped with a modern MFD and who don't wish to keep an iPad accessible in flight.
