Children of parents with SUDs
Counselor Magazine
Nearly 8 percent of the US population met criteria for a substance use disorder (SUD) according to a recent survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA; SAMHSA, 2019). SUDs are associated with increased risk of problems for affected individuals and their family systems and members, including children (Daley & Douaihy, 2019; Daley & Tarter, 2017). This article discusses the impact of SUDs on children as well as children’s protective factors and resilience. We provide suggestions on how practitioners may help children and families affected by loved ones’ SUDs.

'Patient' versus 'client': What is the best way to identify those we treat?
Counselor Magazine
Recently my organization found itself making the decision on whether to use the term “client” or “patient” in identifying the people we treat. Instinctively I gravitate toward “patient,” but I researched several articles to compare my opinion to others.
The preference of the behavioral health treatment community seems to be to use “client” over “patient.”

SAMHSA releases preliminary report on the Drug Abuse Warning Network
SAMHSA
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use, Dr. Elinore McCance-Katz, re-established the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) as a nationwide public health surveillance system to monitor emergency department (ED) visits associated with recent substance use, including those related to opioids. Authorized by the 21st Century Cures Act, this program is necessary to respond effectively to the opioid and addiction crises in the United States and to better inform public health, clinicians, policymakers, and other stakeholders to respond to emerging substance use trends.

The forces that could shape counseling's future
Counseling Today
In 2012, as the American Counseling Association was celebrating its 60th year as an organization, Counseling Today published an article titled “What the future holds for the counseling profession.” In that piece, 19 counseling leaders shared their visions (and best guesses) of how the profession might evolve over the coming decade.
Fast-forward to 2021, and we decided the timing was right to revisit that topic, even though we’re only nine years out (rather than a full decade) from the original article.

As demand surges, counseling clinics learn how to adjust to telehealth
mHealth Intelligence
The coronavirus pandemic forced many counseling centers to transition quickly to telehealth this past year. Some have had an easier time than others in adjusting, but nearly all have learned invaluable lessons in how to deliver virtual care.
“It’s been challenging at times,” says Nikki Fangman, LPCC, executive director of MEBS Counseling, whose Kentucky-based practice went all-virtual in about a week. “We had to shut down our face-to-face services very quickly. A lot of people had to adjust. The first two to four weeks were difficult.”

Addiction risk on the rise for female employees
Human Resource Executive
Women’s risk of drug and alcohol addiction is up 65 percent since September, the latest startling figure to come out of Total Brain’s most recent Mental Health Index.
According to the new data, in addition to dealing with depression, stress and anxiety during COVID-19, more women are turning to substances in an attempt to cope. Additionally, female employees’ risk of sleep apnea has also climbed 126 percent over the past 10 months, according to the index, signaling complete physical and mental exhaustion, experts say.
