Viewing illness as a teacher
Counselor Magazine
John Newport writes: Decades ago, I attended a holistic health conference in San Diego, during which one of the speakers offered the following advice: “The royal path to enjoying robust health is to develop a chronic disease and learn how to care for it.” There is a great deal of wisdom in that statement, as illness often serves as an important warning sign regarding imbalances in our lives. If we wholeheartedly listen to our bodies and embrace a holistic approach to healing, illnesses can indeed serve as valuable teachers.

Transformational education and recovery
Counselor Magazine
A person’s recovery from substance use and abuse is not lifelong and all-powerful; rather, it is something that individuals with proper support networks can manage. Having a supportive community network can help many people find additional strength, hope and motivation to pursue a path of health and growth that will put their behavioral health challenges into a more manageable life process, resulting in less stress and anxiety (Peele, 1992; Peele & Brodsky, 1992).

Pandemic presents new hurdles, and hope, for people struggling with addiction
The Fix
Before Philadelphia shut down to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Ed had a routine: most mornings he would head to a nearby McDonald’s to brush his teeth, wash his face and — when he had the money — buy a cup of coffee. He would bounce between homeless shelters and try to get a shower. But since businesses closed and many shelters stopped taking new admissions, Ed has been mostly shut off from that routine. He’s still living on the streets.

Chester Bennington trending on Twitter as fans recall most impactful celebrity deaths
LoudWire
Linkin Park's Chester Bennington was recently trending on Twitter along with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, but it took a little digging to discover why. Why do celebrity deaths affect us so much?
VICE
Dhvani Solani writes: Last night, when my friend Vineeta Raman heard that Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput had been found dead in his room in Mumbai, she couldn’t help but cry uncontrollably for an hour. The news of his suicide instantly sent shockwaves through the country. But although Raman only knew Singh Rajput in the way we “know” actors through their films, she believes the grief she felt was similar to what she’s previously felt when close family and friends have passed away.

The millennial mental-health crisis
The Atlantic
Many millennials who had their careers crippled by the 2008 recession are being flung into yet another economic downturn, just as they’re supposed to be hitting their career peak. Because of social-distancing restrictions meant to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, young people who hoped to find a partner haven’t been able to date in person for months. And still more outbreaks of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, might occur this year. As David Grusky, the director of the Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality, put it to me, millennials are “the bad-luck cohort.”
