Changing systemic discrimination for behavioral health disorders
Counselor Magazine
For too long individuals with Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders (SUD) have struggled with pervasive issues of stigma and discrimination that has been fueled by decades of media driven false beliefs and misinformation about the causes and prevalence of these disorders. Examples of false beliefs include ideas like “People should just snap out of their depression and pull themselves up by their boot straps,” “Addiction is choice. People can stop anytime they want,” “People that have mental health issues are dangerous,” and “People that are addicted because they have low character; they are all liars and thieves.”

AI and Reddit are helping us track COVID-19's impact on mental health
World Economic Forum
Dealing with a global pandemic has taken a toll on the mental health of millions of people. A team of MIT and Harvard University researchers has shown that they can measure those effects by analyzing the language that people use to express their anxiety online.
Using machine learning to analyze the text of more than 800,000 Reddit posts, the researchers were able to identify changes in the tone and content of language that people used as the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic progressed, from January to April of 2020.

Psychology Today
COVID-19 has ushered in an epidemic of worry. But who is most likely to be experiencing its symptoms? New research appearing in the journal Personality and Individual Differences may have an answer.
A team of scientists led by Marta Malesza of the University of Economics and Human Sciences in Warsaw, Poland found that the top three factors associated with high coronavirus anxiety are: (1) how dangerous people perceive COVID-19 to be, (2) how much information people obtain about COVID-19, and (3) how likely people are to think they will contract the disease.

West Virginia Public Broadcasting
Jen Mills has been a school counselor in Jefferson County, West Virginia for six years, and she’s been a middle school counselor there for four. Unlike school years past, she and her colleagues are navigating a global health pandemic.
“Last year, we're planning field trips, we're planning all these things, [but] this year, we're just kind of in a holding pattern and trying to keep everybody safe,” Mills said.

E-cigarette, counseling combo may help long-time smokers quit
UPI
A combination of e-cigarettes and counseling is twice as effective at getting smokers of traditional cigarettes to quit as a program with counseling alone, at least in the short term, a study published Tuesday by JAMA found.
Among smokers who used e-cigarettes that did not contain nicotine and underwent counseling sessions, 21% had stopped smoking after 24 weeks of treatment, according to the researchers.
