The goal was to give farming families across the river from the village a way to cross during the rainy season, said U of A club president Mabel Smith. “No matter what your role is in the engineering world, there are always choices to make,” she said. “Having global exposure will help engineers ... make decisions with the locals in mind.”

Leadership in Sustainable Infrastructure / Leadership en infrastructures
Summer construction in Montreal continues to create major traffic jams due to years of infrastructure neglect. CBC's Jaela Bernstien reports.
Ottawa Business Journal
The federal government is looking to hire contractors to retrofit the Alexandra Bridge, the historic interprovincial steel truss structure connecting the National Art Gallery with the Canadian Museum of History.
The $32 million project includes replacing the steel grating and rehabilitating the deck floor system, as well as various other steel repairs, according to procurement documents. This project is a continuation of the steel repair work being done to maintain the bridge, which is one of five interprovincial bridges in the Ottawa area.
Summer (read: construction season) is in full swing, and if you've noticed the minefield of detours and traffic cones seems especially bad in Canada's largest cities this year, there's a reason — some experts say it's a symptom of poor planning.
One third of municipal infrastructure in Canada is at risk of rapid deterioration, according to the 2016 findings released by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
The owners of the proposed 12-turbine Otter Creek Wind Farm north of Wallaceburg say they will not be using foundations that require pile driving, and will instead be using a spreadfoot system that requires a few metres of foundation depth.
Boralex said the decision was made to appease members of the community who have expressed concern over pile driving.
Washington State University researchers have created a sustainable alternative to traditional concrete using coal fly ash, a waste product of coal-based electricity generation.
The advance tackles two major environmental problems at once by making use of coal production waste and by significantly reducing the environmental impact of concrete production.
