Travelling to Hong Kong?
The CSCE is looking for volunteers to make technical presentations to
members of the CSCE Hong Kong Branch and (or) the Hong Kong Institution
of Engineers (HKIE). This is strictly on a volunteer basis, with no
payment for spent time or travel expenses. If interested, please send
an outline of your presentation and brief resume at least three months
in advance of your trip to Doug Salloum, CSCE Executive Director, at Doug.Salloum@csce.ca or Brian Burrell, CSCE VP-International at firstname.lastname@example.org
CSCE International on LinkedIn
The CSCE has created a new LinkedIn group called CSCE International.
This private group is for CSCE members interested in the CSCE's
international activities, and in foreign engineering issues, projects,
and research. To request membership, go to CSCE International
on LinkedIn, click Join, and your request will be reviewed by a group
manager. In addition, a subgroup called CSCE International Members has
been created specifically for CSCE members living outside of Canada.

2014 CSCE Best Student Paper Competition Winners
The winners for the 2014 CSCE Best Student Paper Competition held in
Halifax from May 28 to 31 have been determined from over 85 impressive
entries. Congratulations to Magdy Ibrahim from Concordia University for
winning 1st place and to Mohamed Sherir and Masrra Jajjawi, both from
Ryerson University for placing 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Be sure to
check out their papers in your copy of the conference proceedings and
watch for the Call for Papers for next year's conference to be held in

to participate in the 10th Sino-American Technology and Engineering

Canadian holodeck-like 3-D sketching system unveiled at SIGGRAPH 2014
At the SIGGRAPH 2014 conference in Vancouver, researchers from the University of Montreal demoed Hyve-3D, a collaborative 3-D sketching and modeling system that allows designers to not only sketch and model in 3-D but also visualize design operations in 3-D, without the need for glasses or VR headset.
Environmental group challenges construction of Quebec cement plant
An environmental group wants the construction of a Quebec cement plant stopped and submitted for review.
The group is asking Quebec Superior Court to annul an authorization certificate giving the green light to the cement factory in Port-Daniel, in the province's Gaspe region.
It wants the project to undergo public environmental hearings.

Structal-Bridges obtain two contracts in New York State

Structal-Bridges, a division of Canam Group Inc., has obtained two contracts totalling over $90 million for the fabrication of the steel structure that will replace two major bridges in New York.
Mount Polley inquiry must be independent
The engineering firm that designed the Mount Polley tailings pond containment system that collapsed on Aug. 4 also designed a tailings dam that failed catastrophically in South America on Aug. 19, 1995.
Knight Piésold designed the tailings containment facility for the Canadian-owned Omai gold mine in Guyana. Before the accident, it had handed off operational responsibility to the mining company, which then hired another engineering consultant, the Canadian firm Golder Associates.
