|Dr. Easa receives the IAAM Medal for 2018 from IAAM Secretary General, Dr. Ashutosh Tiwari, at the European Advanced Materials Congress, held in Stockholm, Sweden
Dr. Said Easa, a past CSCE Board member, has been honoured with the prestigious IAAM Medal for 2018 from the International Association of Advanced Materials (over 50,000 members from 139 countries) for his “notable and outstanding research in the Advanced Materials Science & Technology.”
The award (medal and certificate) was presented to Dr. Easa by the IAAM Secretary General, Dr. Ashutosh Tiwari, during the award ceremony at the European Advanced Materials Congress on August 21, 2018, Stockholm, Sweden. The Congress included four symposiums, attended by 700 participants. The title of Dr. Easa’s presentation at the congress was “New Superpave Asphalt Mix Design Method Considering Uncertainty.”
Superpave (Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements) is a multi-million joint US-Canada project (1988-1993) and is currently the predominantly design method. The method consists of five complex phases: select binder, select trial (aggregate) blends, evaluate trial blends, select design binder content, and check moisture susceptibility. Surprisingly, uncertainty was considered only in Phase 1. Recognizing this gap last year, Dr. Easa has incorporated uncertainty into Phases 2-5 and published four papers (one for each phase) in the Journal of Testing and Evaluation, American Society of Testing and Materials. The research was well received by the pavement design community.
|CSCE Fellow and Distinguished Professor Emeritus Ralph Haas receives the U of Alberta's honorary doctor of science degree
Ralph Haas is known in the engineering world as “the father of pavement asset management.” His pioneering concepts and technologies have resulted in better-performing, safer and less costly road networks. The author of 12 books and numerous technical articles on pavement and infrastructure asset management, he is also an educator whose students have become leaders in transportation agencies, consultancies and universities. Haas is a member of the Order of Canada, fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee medals, and U of A Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.
|'Theory and Practice of Water and Wastewater Treatment'
The second edition of the popular textbook, "Theory and Practice of Water and Wastewater Treatment," (John Wiley & Sons) will be available by the end of August, just in time for the Fall semester. Co-authors are Ronald Droste and Ronald Gehr, both fellows of CSCE. The book has been fully updated and is suitable as a senior-level undergraduate text, thoroughly covering both water and wastewater treatment. Included is a Lite version of the GPS-X wastewater treatment modelling software. Available as an e-book and hard cover, with solutions manual for instructors.
The Canadian Red Cross is looking to expand its register of professionals who work in the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) field with international field experience that can be eventually deployed as delegates in responses in Canada and abroad.

CSA S157-17 / S157.1-17 Strength Design in Aluminum was published in late 2017. It is available in both English and French @ http://shop.csa.ca/en/canada/structures/s157-17s1571-17/invt/27007262017. This standard applies to the design, fabrication, erection, and inspection of aluminum alloy members and assemblies. It is for building applications, but it is written in a form that it may be used for all types of aluminum load-bearing components or assemblies.

Uber Technologies Inc. is building a roadmap to become more than a ride-hailing app and it's chief executive is indicating Toronto will figure into that transition.
Dara Khosrowshahi hinted at global plans for bus and train services, the expansion of its Jump bike and e-scooter rentals, more partnerships with public transit providers and autonomous vehicle efforts in an interview with The Canadian Press, where he stressed how important the city is to the company's growth.

Nine floors filled with interactive exhibits made for a fully immersive experience for more than 500 members of the U of T Engineering community at the Myhal Centre Open House, held on Sept. 13.
The experiential event enabled faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends to engage with the state-of-the-art facilities, learning spaces, institutes and centres housed in the new Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship.
A building that was badly needed at Laurentian University is now open for business.
The Cliff Fielding Research, Innovation and Engineering Building will also be the new home of the Bharti School of Engineering which had previously operated in the nearby Fraser and Science buildings.
Saskatchewan engineers recently pulled up in front of the Legislative Building with a bus to offer a tour of the Regina Bypass and show how local engineers have been involved with the project.
The Government of Saskatchewan has faced criticism for hiring a French consortium to lead construction of the $2 billion project, but these engineers wanted to display a different angle.
Of the various office developments under construction in Toronto, some receive attention for their height, some for their density, and others for their flashy glazed exteriors. In the Liberty Village neighbourhood, Hullmark's 80 Atlantic Avenue is getting attention for another reason, with the five-storey, Quadrangle-designed office development being built with timber construction instead of the more prevalent steel and concrete methods.
