GUARD AND MILITARY NEWS

General: Praising the A-10 to lawmakers is 'treason'
DoD Buzz
A top U.S. Air Force general warned officers that praising the A-10 attack plane to lawmakers amounts to “treason,” according to a news report. Maj. Gen. James Post, vice commander of Air Combat Command, was quoted as saying, “If anyone accuses me of saying this, I will deny it … anyone who is passing information to Congress about A-10 capabilities is committing treason,” in a report published Jan. 15 on The Arizona Daily Independent.

Increase taxes to stop defense cuts?
Politico
The new chairman of the House Armed Services Committee is taking a bold stand for a Republican and fifth-generation Texan who represents one of the most conservative districts in the country: He’s not ruling out tax hikes as part of a deal to avert sequestration. Rep. Mac Thornberry isn’t advocating higher taxes — he’s just acknowledging the reality that President Barack Obama will demand some new revenues be paired with entitlement cuts championed by Republicans as part of any deal to avert the automatic spending cuts set to return next fiscal year.

2015 State of the Union fact check
Politico
President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address provided a prime-time opportunity to contrast his lame duck vision for the economy, terrorism and foreign policy against a new Republican-led Congress eager to prevent any big victories. But with such high political stakes — and a television audience of tens of millions — also comes the allure to stretch the facts for even a small boost in public opinion polls. Here’s Politico’s look at some of the key parts of Obama’s speech, and where he made some of his edgiest claims.

Republican response: GOP Congress ready to champion middle class
Fox News
Sen. Joni Ernst hammered home the idea of a new Republican Congress ready to champion the middle class in America as well as go after terrorists abroad in the Republican response to President Obama’s State of the Union address Jan. 20. In contrast to Obama's rosy view on the economy, Ernst spoke of the struggle that still exists. "Americans have been hurting," she said, and cited concerns over stagnant wages, lost jobs and higher monthly insurance bills.

USAF leaders offer FY16 budget hints
Defense News
Expect the U.S. Air Force's FY16 budget request to look similar to what the service submitted in FY15, including an ongoing push to retire fleets of aging aircraft, the services top two officials told reporters recently. Speaking at a semi-annual "State of the Air Force" event, Secretary Deborah Lee James and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh confirmed they will move forward with plans to retire fleets despite strong pushback from Congress over the A-10 Warthog and, to a lesser extent, the U-2 spy plane and KC-10 tanker.

Pentagon still pushing to retire A-10 and close bases
DoD Buzz
The Pentagon renewed its commitment Jan. 16 to retiring the Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt ground attack aircraft and closing excess military bases in the U.S., setting up another battle with Congress in budget hearings to begin next month. Congress last year rejected the Air Force’s push to mothball the A-10, popularly known as the Warthog, and the Pentagon’s proposal to establish a new Base Re-Alignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) but Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said both issues would be a top priority for the Defense Department in hearings on the 2016 defense budget.

Chairman Rogers announces GOP subcommittee membership for the 114th Congress
U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations
House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers recently announced the Republican membership of the 12 Appropriations subcommittees for the 114th Congress. "Every single member of the Appropriations Committee plays a vital role in steering federal dollars on behalf of the American taxpayer. The next two years will bring many fiscal challenges, and our Committee members will have an enormous responsibility — overseeing hundreds of billions of dollars — but I have full faith everyone is more than up to the task. These members embody the Committee’s long tradition of nose-to-the-grindstone hard work, careful decision-making and thoughtful deliberation, and quite frankly, they know how to get things done. I am honored and proud to serve alongside each of them in the 114th Congress," Chairman Rogers said.

Reducing veteran suicides, one step at a time
MinnPost
Clay Hunt was a Marine veteran, a soldier who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, who volunteered in earthquake-ravaged Haiti and Chile and went on long-distance bike rides to keep his war-induced depression at bay. He also sought treatment at Veterans Affairs hospitals, but, as his family told 60 Minutes, was frustrated by scheduling delays and the type of treatment he found there. In March 2011, he shot himself in his Houston apartment, at the age of 28. Last year, a group of lawmakers, led in part by Minnesota Rep. Tim Walz, took up the cause of Hunt and his fellow veterans, and this week, just days into a new Congress, the House passed the Clay Hunt SAV Act.

NGAUS: Commission must rethink who's really 'ready'
Breaking Defense
The National Guard Association of the United States is confident the White House and Congress will choose wisely when selecting the men and women to sit on the National Commission on the Future of the Army. The commissioners must be open-minded, forward-thinking individuals with knowledge of all three components of the Army (the active force, the Reserve and the National Guard). We wish them well as they begin their important duties and offer our thoughts on issues they should discuss during their months of study and consideration.
