Living longer can come with a cost. Most of us aspire to live long lives. Nevertheless, living longer means that we will have to come up with the resources to pay for those extra years.
The National Guard will have to cut back weekend drills because of its deployment to the southern border if the Pentagon doesn't move around money to replenish its training account, the chief of the National Guard has said. National Guard Bureau Chief Gen. Joseph Lengyel told the Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee he anticipates a $193 million shortfall as a result of the border deployment. "If we don't reprogram funds back into our training accounts, we will have to make modifications within our current appropriation that will either reduce our training opportunities or do things like cancel drill weekends to find the money," Lengyel said.
Soldiers with over 16 years of service who want to transfer their Post-9/11 GI Bill to a dependent must do so before July 12 or risk losing the ability to transfer education benefits. Last year, the Department of Defense implemented a new Post-9/11 GI Bill Transfer of Education Benefits, or TEB, eligibility requirement, which instituted a "six- to 16-year cutoff rule," said Master Sgt. Gerardo T. Godinez, senior Army retention operations NCO with Army G-1. Further, soldiers who want to transfer their education entitlement must have at least six years of service, he said.
Military retirees seemed to get the message to sign up for federal dental benefits before the Tricare Retiree Dental Program ended Dec. 31, with nearly 1.2 million of those eligible making the switch, according to data released by the Defense Department. As of March 15, 1,424,521 Tricare beneficiaries were enrolled in the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program, including 1,197,158 beneficiaries who were previously enrolled in TRDP. The remainder — more than 225,000 retirees and family members — were new enrollees to FEDVIP.
