NGAUS Offers Five Recommendations To Army Commission, EANGUS Set to Testify in June
NGAUS via PRNewswire
The National Guard Association of the United States today offered the National Commission on the Future of the Army five basic recommendations to fully leverage the capabilities and cost-effectiveness of the Army National Guard.
Retired Maj. Gen. Gus Hargett, the NGAUS president, made the recommendations during testimony to the commission in Alexandria, Va.
Congress created the eight-member blue-ribbon panel in the fiscal 2015 National Defense Authorization Act to help bridge differences in opinion among the components over the best way forward for the nation's largest military service.

Commissary price increases in Senate bill
Lawmakers have taken a first step toward increasing prices in commissaries as well as privatizing the commissary system, in legislation approved by the Senate Armed Services Committee. A proposal included in the committee's draft version of the 2016 defense authorization bill would strike the current law that requires commissaries to sell all items at cost and replace it with a provision that would require defense officials to mark up prices to pay for the operating expenses of the commissary system.
Bill would allow vets to use GI benefits for pre-apprenticeships
The Ripon Advance
U.S. Rep. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., introduced the Veterans’ Entry to Apprenticeship Act recently, legislation that would allow returning military veterans to use education benefits for enrollment into programs for pre-apprenticeship.
"As a veteran, I know the difficulties our returning service members face as they look to transition to civilian life," McSally said. "This bill will make it easier for them to obtain good-paying jobs using the benefits they earned."
Rep. Norcross introduces bill guaranteeing headstones for military spouses
U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross has introduced legislation to make sure veterans do not have to wait until their own deaths to obtain a benefit promised to them and their family members.
Known as the Dignity for America’s Military Families Act, the legislation is intended to fix an oversight in an existing law guaranteeing that veterans and their spouses or children receive a government-furnished headstone or grave marker, regardless of whether they are buried in a veterans cemetery.
Senate passes Sen. Moran's bill to fix 40-mile Choice Act eligibility
The U.S. Senate passed the Access to Community Care for Veterans Act, legislation authored by U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kansas — a member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee — that amends the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014 (Choice Act) to give veterans access to community health care when the nearest VA medical facility within 40 miles driving distance from a veteran’s home is incapable of offering care the veteran needs. The bill now heads to the U.S. House of Representatives for a vote.

U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower, successfully included a number of provisions in this year’s National Defense Authorization Act. The measure awaits consideration by the full Senate.
"This year, we have assembled a bipartisan reform bill to help ensure that our military remains the best-trained, best-equipped, and most professional fighting force in the world," Wicker said.

The Associated Press via Yahoo News
The Islamic State group's takeover of the provincial capital of Ramadi is stark evidence that Iraqi forces lack the "will to fight," Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in a TV interview that aired May 24. At Arlington, Obama talks milestones
President Barack Obama marked his seventh Memorial Day as commander in chief on May 25, noting that it is the first marking of the holiday in 14 years in which the United States is not engaged in a massive ground war overseas.
In his address at Arlington National Cemetery, the president said this Memorial Day is "especially meaningful" because it is the first since the end of the war in Afghanistan. The president also noted the 70th anniversary of the allied victory in World War II, a milestone celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean earlier this month.
