EANGUS is excited to offer a unique opportunity to roll up your sleeves and serve in the city of New Orleans with Habitat for Humanity! On this day of service with New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, sponsored by Mercury Insurance, you will work in a neighborhood devastated by Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent levee failures to help build a home for a hardworking family. The best part? You’ll be working right alongside the future homeowner. No construction experience is necessary, and all skill levels are welcome. The build will take place on Friday, August 19th, the day before our 45th annual conference begins, and will last from 7:45-4:00. We can accommodate up to 40 volunteers on the build site. Lunch and transportation will be provided. Will you join us? To volunteer, email email@example.com at the National Office.

Rep. Will Hurd writes, "I knew the federal government had a real problem with cybersecurity. But there was one moment, during an oversight hearing with the senior security officer at the Social Security Administration (SSA), that I realized it was even worse than I originally thought.
I asked a simple question about what the agency, which stores the personally identifiable information for nearly all Americans, was doing to patch bugs revealed by a technical vulnerability assessment.
The official’s less-than-helpful answer? ‘Very many different things.’"
The general public vastly overestimates the number of post-9/11 veterans with mental health conditions, a misconception veterans advocates say threatens the overall well-being and employment prospects of former troops.
A survey of more than 1,000 adults in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom found that roughly 40 percent believed more than half the 2.8 million veterans who have served since 2001 have a mental health condition.
The Army needs to break with DoD’s modernization strategy or risk being broken itself. Simply stated, the Army cannot afford to cut end strength and units in order to free up resources for modernization. This is all the more true if the modernization programs are complex, expensive and will take years to reach IOC. The assessment of the global security environment undergirding DoD’s decision to emphasize capability over capacity is fundamentally at odds with reality.

A U.S. Air National Guard unit has successfully released eight Lockheed Martin Enhanced Laser Guided Training Rounds, or ELGTR, for the first time, the company announced July 26. The release from the unit's F-16C/D Fighting Falcon Block 40/42 jets took place during recent flight evaluations at the Barry M. Goldwater Ranges in Arizona, Lockheed said in a statement.
Some South Carolina Army National Guard soldiers can now carry concealed sidearms at local armories to protect themselves and others from terrorist attacks.
Guard commanders, with the approval of Gov. Nikki Haley, have initiated a program that allows authorized soldiers to carry concealed sidearms in all of the state’s 65 armories. Previously, Guard soldiers were not allowed to carry weapons while at work, even if they had state permits.
A year after a terror-motivated mass shooting in Chattanooga, Tennessee, left four Marines and a sailor dead, the Marine Corps has begun the process of shoring up recruiting centers against the prospect of similar attacks in the future.
The Corps published a solicitation this month for bullet-resistant cubicle covers for each of roughly 1,500 Marine Corps recruiting centers nationwide.
Veterans will have same-day access to primary care appointments and mental health services at Veterans Affairs facilities by December, VA Secretary Bob McDonald promised Tuesday.
Addressing the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, McDonald said veterans wait an average of five days for primary care, six days for specialty care and two for mental health services, but VA plans to reduce those further by the end of the year.
Military health system patients will notice a change to the post-appointment satisfaction surveys they receive after a trip to the doctor.
Fewer surveys, a new design and less hassle are being rolled out in coming months, promises Defense Health Agency Director Vice Adm. Raquel Bono.
A new system, the Joint Outpatient Experience Survey, or JOES, is replacing the surveys once conducted by the individual services’ medical commands.

Government contractors must devote more resources and attention toward insider threat programs within their companies, a Deloitte executive said. "Developing strategies so that employees know what kind of activities are acceptable and which ones are not as critical to the protection of data," said Mike Gelles, managing director at Deloitte Consulting and author of "Insider Threat: Prevention, Detection, Mitigation and Deterrence."

An ARNG E5 (MP) who serves as a VA Police Officer at a VA hospital had accumulated more than 140 semester hours of credit from the military and courses he had taken in college, although he had not taken courses in the past four years. The VA counselor anticipated that he would need the typical 30 semester hours of academic residency to complete a baccalaureate degree. Naturally, he was quite surprised when we presented him with several degree plans from three different colleges that had him at 100+ semester hours – the one that he chose has him at 117 (all he needs is the capstone course to graduate), then we (HERC) can transition him into an MBA program.

It is with great pride and honor that the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States (EANGUS), a military service organization representing over 414,000 men and women of the Air and Army National Guard, their families, retirees, and survivors, adds its voice of overwhelming support for the documentary "Citizen Soldier."
"Citizen Soldier" is a very dramatic story told first hand by a group of Soldiers who served in the Oklahoma Army National Guard’s Thunderbird Brigade during their deployment to Afghanistan in 2011. During the story, the viewer is easily morphed into one of the squad members as they experience the shock and awe of war, experiencing almost the same heart-pounding emotions as the Soldiers.
This modern-decade era Band of Brothers are from the same area of the state of Oklahoma, and although they thought they knew each other before their deployment, they magnified and solidified their bond through their shared experiences in Afghanistan. One line from the story rang true: "There is no stronger bond than shared pain."
The intensity of combat and looming possibility of negative outcomes draws the viewer in so close to the lives of the Soldiers that the viewer almost experiences post-traumatic stress just from watching the story unfold. The shock and awe of war became shock and awe in the time spent watching the film.
We wholeheartedly endorse this film and recommend it to those who need to know what real citizen-soldiers do.
Working for America’s Best!

The Department of Defense (DoD) announced today the next generation of TRICARE Managed Care Support Contractors. The new contracts, which go into effect nine months after the award, establish two TRICARE regions in the United States – East and West - instead of the current three. The East Region contract goes to Humana Government Business, Inc., Louisville, KY, and in the West Region the new Managed Care contractor is Health Net Federal Services LLC, Rancho Cordova, CA. These contracts are replacing current arrangements under which health care is provided to eligible members of the uniformed services, their families, retirees and their families.
