Worries over defense spending have military families tightening belts
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Most military families are worried about defense cuts in Washington, driving a record demand for professional financial advice, according to information released this week by Fort Worth-based First Command Financial Services.
According to the July survey, 70 percent of military respondents felt anxious about reductions in defense spending, and more than half are concerned about their job security.
Chief of the National Guard Bureau visits Camp Ripley
Gen. Frank J. Grass, chief of the National Guard Bureau, visited camp Ripley to meet with National Guard men and women and share with them the future directions of the National Guard. While at Camp Ripley 46 years later, Grass and his wife, along with Chief Master Sgt. Mitchell Brush, senior enlisted advisor to the National Guard, toured the facility, its many resources and talked to the men and women working at Camp Ripley.
Son of Alaska Air Guard colonel named Air National Guard Youth of the Year
Staff Sgt. Edward Eagerton writes: "He is confident yet equally humble, a combination of qualities often not found in youth. Compounded with accomplishment, Brice Wilbanks, now entering his sophomore year at South Anchorage High School, made the perfect candidate to receive the 2015 Air National Guard Youth of the Year award, for which he was recognized at a ceremony."
King, Collins call for more US addiction treatment funding
Sun Journal via Bangor Daily News
The same day Republican Gov. Paul LePage reiterated his intent to use National Guard troops to fight Maine's growing heroin problem, the state's U.S. senators asked the federal government to increase access to treatment programs for painkiller addicts.
Those addicted to prescription painkillers often use heroin as a substitute when they can no longer get a prescription filled or afford to buy black market painkillers on the street.
National Guard leadership visits Oregon
The director of the National Guard Bureau along with his senior enlisted adviser, visited the 142nd Fighter Wing during a town hall event, speaking and interacting directly with Guardsmen here on base.
Army Gen. Frank J. Grass, the 27th NBG Chief, and Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Mitchell O. Brush, addressed key issues effecting Airmen, while outlining the three key missions of the National Guard including; providing resources to the governor to protect the homeland, supporting worldwide combat capabilities, and Oregon's continual assistance to Bangladesh and Vietnam under the State Partnership Program.
At Chattanooga remembrance, Secretary of Defense vows to protect troops
One month after the fatal shooting of four Marines and a sailor in Chattanooga, Tennessee at a Navy Reserve Center, an air of uncertainty still surrounds the catastrophic attack and its roots.
"The meaning of their killing is yet unclear. What combination of disturbed mind, violent extremism and hateful ideology was at work, we don't know. Perhaps it will never be fully known, let alone fathomable by all who have the decency and the conscience to value their fellow human beings," Defense Secretary Ash Carter told hundreds of mourners at a memorial service.
Pentagon warms up to idea of Gitmo moving inside US
The Daily Caller
The Pentagon is reportedly scouting locations in the United States to house detainees from Guantanamo Bay, according to a report from The Associated Press.
Officials are now looking at the Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas and the Charleston Navy brig in South Carolina as possible spots for Gitmo detainees shipped from Cuba to the United States, The Associated Press reports. The AP report punctuates years of Pentagon squeamishness about carrying out President Barack Obama's plans to close Gitmo.
A challenge accepted
Earlier this year a challenge was issued to Army National Guard recruiters across the country: enlist nine new recruits in 90 days.
It was not going to be easy when considering the average is about three in that same time frame, but the challenge would help the Army Guard stay on track to maintain its end strength, it was a way to motivate the recruiting force through a little healthy competition.

Jeb Bush unveils VA reform plan for presidential bid
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush hopes to thrust Veteran Affairs reform into the center of the 2016 presidential campaign — and position himself as the most veteran-friendly candidate — with the release of a new policy platform today.
The move comes almost six months before the first Republican primary, but also at a time when Bush and others in the large GOP field are struggling to gain the attention and support of likely voters.
OMB director: 'sequestration was never intended to take effect'
In a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee, Office of Management and Budget Director Shaun Donovan outlined "serious concerns" about funding cuts outlined in the proposed appropriations bill.
The bill would reduce funding overall by about $4 billion, giving the government 16.3 percent less than President Obama's budget request.
"We Care for America" Foundation: Program suspended until further notice
The National Guard Soldier and Airmen Relief Fund was created many years ago through a generous grant from a corporate partner. Over time, this fund has supported National Guard members faster than we have replenished the funds. As a result, we have had to temporarily suspend the program and focus on rebuilding the reserves.
