Pentagon lists what it can't do under a continuing resolution
The Washington Examiner
Funding to deal with fallout from the Office of Personnel Management data breach topped the list of programs the Pentagon would like to save if Congress passes a full-year continuing resolution for fiscal 2016. A continuing resolution would fund the Defense Department at the previous year's level and could occur due to Congress' difficulty in passing a defense budget this year. Under a continuing resolution, the Defense Department would be barred from starting new programs.

DoD's 'Future' vision doesn't overlook families
Military Times
Family advocates are pleased to see that provisions affecting families have been added to the latest drafts of the Defense Department's far-reaching "Force of the Future" plan. "The first iteration of ‘Force of the Future’ didn’t mention families," said Joyce Raezer, executive director of the National Military Family Association. Raezer said she and others met with Acting Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Brad Carson and brought up the need to include families.

Louisiana National Guard better, stronger 10 years after Katrina
National Guard
Ten years ago, Hurricane Katrina devastated southeastern Louisiana. Three weeks later, Hurricane Rita did the same in southwestern Louisiana. The Louisiana National Guard played a crucial role in the immediate response to both storms, as well as the recovery. Efforts were complicated, however, by the fact that many Guard facilities, including the headquarters at Jackson Barracks and the aviation facility at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport were destroyed, and many of the Guard members were personally affected by the storm. Today, the Louisiana National Guard has rebuilt, incorporating many lessons learned along the way.

Women soldiers thrive in unexpected roles

Officials: China and Russia are using hacked data to target US spies
Los Angeles Times
Foreign spy services, especially in China and Russia, are aggressively aggregating and cross-indexing hacked U.S. computer databases — including security clearance applications, airline records and medical insurance forms — to identify U.S. intelligence officers and agents, U.S. officials said. At least one clandestine network of American engineers and scientists who provide technical assistance to U.S. undercover operatives and agents overseas has been compromised as a result, according to two U.S. officials.

Exclusive: US weighs sanctioning Russia as well as China in cyber attacks
Reuters
The United States is considering sanctions against both Russian and Chinese individuals and companies for cyber attacks against U.S. commercial targets, several U.S. officials said on Aug. 31. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said no final decision had been made on imposing sanctions, which could strain relations with Russia further and, if they came soon, cast a pall over a state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping in September.

"We Care for America" Foundation: Program suspended until further notice
EANGUS
The National Guard Soldier and Airmen Relief Fund was created many years ago through a generous grant from a corporate partner. Over time, this fund has supported National Guard members faster than we have replenished the funds. As a result, we have had to temporarily suspend the program and focus on rebuilding the reserves.
