Congress faces a full plate to avoid sequestration
Federal News Radio
Congress returns from August recess on Sept. 8 and the clock is ticking. With 24 calendar days — just 10 of them working — before the end of the fiscal year, Congress needs to decide what to do on pressing issues ranging from appropriation bills to transportation projects, and make time for the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and a visit from Pope Francis.

Federal budget storm still brewing
Lawmakers were away from Washington all of August, but there was little reason for them to take that extended vacation. They only have until the end of September to fund the government or else the government will shut down.
Department of Defense advances wearable medical devices market
A major segment of the mobile health field that’s making an impact on the healthcare industry is the development of wearable medical devices. From smartwatches to biosensors in the form of skin patches, the market for wearable medical devices has been growing as new innovations are created around the clock. The Department of Defense stated in a news release that it will be partnering with academia centers and the private sector to push forward the manufacturing of wearable medical devices.
Pentagon chief says Iran deal strengthens US military option
Agence France-Presse via JP Updates
U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter offered assurances Sept. 4 that the Iran nuclear deal will leave Washington with a "more effective" military option if that becomes necessary.
Carter defended the agreement in an opinion piece in USA Today, arguing it would lead to a more durable outcome.
But the Pentagon chief said the military option was still on the table and, if called for, such action would be "more effective" as a result of the agreement.
NGAUS: Specify emergency needs
The National Guard's powerful lobbying arm is pushing for a legal requirement that the Guard report what it needs to respond to domestic emergencies, a way to highlight gaps for the Pentagon and for Congress to fill.
While the top priority at National Guard Association of the United States is still an end to sequestration and avoiding a continuing resolution that could last a year, its president, retired Maj. Gen. Gus Hargett, said he is watching several other issues: the AH-64 Apache transfers from the Guard to the active component, full-time manning and the reporting issue.
Military pay raise all but locked in at 1.3 percent
You can start making plans for how you'll spend that 1.3 percent military pay hike in January — that number is unlikely to go any higher, and even less likely to drop.
That's a disappointment to advocates who were pushing for a larger paycheck boost to keep military salaries in line with increases in private-sector wages. But it's also good news for families worried about potential paycheck problems that could have arisen amid the continued budget gridlock on Capitol Hill.
DOD acquisition chief: Chasm between national security needs and solutions never greater
Federal Times via C4ISR & Networks
The pressure that sequestration has put on agencies is not new anymore, but its challenges are as daunting as ever. Frank Kendall, undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics at the Defense Department, said that the difficulties DOD is having are unprecedented.
"I cannot recall any time in my memory when we had such a disconnect between our national security needs and how to meet those needs," he said, speaking at the Professional Services Council’s Dialogue Series Lunch Sept. 2 in Crystal City.
Equipping our modern reserve component on a budget
Modernization of the forces is not an easy task. With competing requirements in the federal budget and in the Department of Defense, the reserve components face a future filled with little to no modernization of equipment, risking relevancy on tomorrow’s battlefields and usefulness here in the homeland.

"We Care for America" Foundation: Program suspended until further notice
The National Guard Soldier and Airmen Relief Fund was created many years ago through a generous grant from a corporate partner. Over time, this fund has supported National Guard members faster than we have replenished the funds. As a result, we have had to temporarily suspend the program and focus on rebuilding the reserves.
