10 percent of Americans admit to illicit drug use

Nearly 10 percent of Americans aged 12 and older were illicit drug users in 2013, and almost 20 million said they used marijuana, making it the most widely used drug, U.S. health officials reported. The new study findings are from a government report outlining the extent of substance use and mental illness in the nation. The report is based on an analysis of data from the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.More

Anyone interested in joining EAPA's Communications Panel (which oversees the Journal of Employee Assistance), Workplace Disaster Preparedness Panel, or Research Panel is welcome to attend their respective meetings on Tuesday, Sept 30. On Monday, Sept 29, current and aspiring chapter and branch leaders will gather for a "best practice" discussion about how to build and maintain successful chapters and branches; and that same afternoon, all first time conference attendees and new members are encouraged to attend the Newcomer Orientation and Networking session to meet your fellow newcomers, EAPA leaders, and representatives from this year's Florida host committee. Maximizing social model principles in residential recovery settings

Peer support is integral to a variety of approaches to alcohol and drug problems. However, there is limited information about the best ways to facilitate it. The "social model" approach developed in California offers useful suggestions for facilitating peer support in residential recovery settings. Key principles include using 12-step or other mutual help group strategies to create and facilitate a recovery environment, involving program participants in decision making and facility governance, using personal recovery experience as a way to help others and emphasizing recovery as an interaction between the individual and their environment.More

Business owners never imagine that their employee of the month, top salesperson or friendly receptionist will test positive for drugs. But it happens. Substance abuse isn't uncommon in the workplace. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence estimates that 70 percent of an estimated 14.8 million U.S. individuals who use illegal drugs are employed. New alcoholism drug to undergo clinical trial

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism will conduct a clinical trial of gabapentin enacarbil as a potential treatment for alcohol use disorder. NIAAA estimates that the six-month trial will begin in the first half of 2015 and will enroll approximately 350 participants. The study will assess the safety and efficacy of gabapentin enacarbil in people who have been diagnosed with AUD. NIAAA is working in partnership with the biopharmaceutical company XenoPort, of Santa Clara, California, which will supply the study drug.More

Brain scan study aims to one day personalize PTSD treatment

Study: Recovery eludes long-term unemployed

More than 20 percent of Americans laid off the past five years are still unemployed and one in four who found work is in a temporary job, according to a survey out recently. The report underscores that despite a sharp drop in long-term unemployment recently, many people out of work at least six months are still struggling to recoup their former wages and lifestyles. Those idled for years face an even tougher road back to employment.More
