CFEBA Service Project This Weekend!
Join CFEBA this Saturday from 9-11 am to volunteer with the Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in Washington, DC as we help prepare the only national park devoted to water-loving plants for winter! Please feel free to bring your family (kids 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult) — the event is part of the Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens’ Family Volunteer Day! Registration and photo release forms are available if you would like to complete them in advance and have us submit them for you (forms will also be available onsite the day of). CFEBA Highlights: Light Up the Night Gala
On Tuesday November 4th, the CFEBA held its Annual Fundraising Gala & Silent Auction, Light Up the Night, at the Renaissance DC Downtown Hotel. Over 200 guests attended and the silent auction alone raised over $10,000 for the CFEBA, which is the highest auction total revenue to date!

The Energy Bar Association and the Foundation of the Energy Law Journal are pleased to announce that the new edition of the Energy Law Journal (Volume 35:2) is posted on the ELJ's website and is available by clicking on the following link: http://www.felj.org/energy-law-journal/current-issue/volume-35-no2-2014. For those members electing to receive hardcopies, the new edition, on 100 percent recycled paper, will start arriving in members' mailboxes soon.

LaFleur elaborates on FERC role in CO2 rules
As the comment session for EPA’s proposed regulations for carbon dioxide emissions comes to a close after this month, the chairwoman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission says there are potential issues of concern with the rules but that she is avoiding becoming overly involved at this point. "We should have a reliability consideration of some kind in the Clean Power Plan," Cheryl A. LaFleur told reporters Nov. 7 at an event hosted by research group IHS International.
Law schools starting to focus on shale

The continued growth of the regional oil and natural gas industry has led to some law schools altering course offerings to meet the rising demand for specialized legal help. The University of Pittsburgh School of Law, Duquesne University School of Law and West Virginia University College of Law have all adjusted curriculum within the past three years as nearby Marcellus Shale production continues to expand and the industry matures, with hopes that their graduates will find good-paying jobs in the field.
Australia 'losing out' on renewable energy investment
Investment into renewable energy projects in Australia has dropped by 70 percent in the last year, according to a new report by a climate change body. The Climate Council says foreign investors are going to other countries because Australia's government has no clear renewable energy policy. Australia has gone from "leader to laggard" in energy projects, it added. Another new report says Australia will need to raise its carbon emission reduction target to 40 percent by 2025.
Denton, Texas, rejects fracking but state to continue drilling permits
A state agency that regulates oil and gas will continue issuing permits to companies seeking to drill in Denton, Texas, despite residents passing a ban to prevent further hydraulic fracturing in the North Texas city. At an event sponsored by the Texas Tribune, Railroad Commission Chairwoman Christi Craddick said she was disappointed in the measure’s approval and that she’ll continue issuing the permits, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Carbon Capture and Sequestration: Where Does this "Green" Technology Fit in the New Electric Generation Sector?
On November 19, 2014 the EBA International Energy Law & Transactions Committee is planning to hold a panel discussion. Panelists will examine what is CCS; what is its relationship to climate change concerns; what is the state of the technology today and what are the key R&D or commercial-scale demonstration projects in the US and around the world; whether it can serve in Europe to help ease the dependency on Russian natural gas; what are the regulatory structures CCS projects must work within today; what are the challenges CCS is facing; how does enhanced oil recovery contribute to the viability of CCS projects; and how the approaching EPA regulations on carbon dioxide emissions in electric generation are proposing to treat CCS.

An Evening with Steven Mufson
EBA Book Club Presents: An Evening with Steven Mufson, Author of Keystone XL: Down the Line. Washington Post energy correspondent Steven Mufson will join the EBA Book Club (and friends) on the evening of November 20, 2014 to discuss his book Keystone XL: Down the Line, his experience as an energy correspondent, and emerging energy issues. A light networking reception will precede the discussion. All are welcome — even if you have not read the 3Q, 2014. If you would like to read the book, there is still time! Reception to honor Commissioner Norman C. Bay
On December 3, 2014, the EBA will hold a reception in honor of Commissioner Norman C. Bay, who was recently sworn in to his first term at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. For five years prior to his confirmation, Commissioner Bay served as the Director of FERC’s Office of Enforcement. Commissioner Bay has also previously served as a Professor of Law at the University of New Mexico School of Law and as the U.S. Attorney in the District of New Mexico. This is a great opportunity to "mix and mingle" in an informal setting with the Commissioner and fellow EBA members. We hope to see you there!
