Since April is designated as "National Distracted Driver Awareness" month Sheriff Wayne Ivey thought he would use this week’s Crime Prevention Message to remind everyone about the importance of Florida’s Move Over Law.

Legislature debates funding for cold cases
The killing remains unsolved, and it's just one of about 15,000 Florida homicides since 1980 that remain a mystery to police. Today, there is no statewide law enforcement group actively working to solve those crimes. But a bill being considered by the Florida Legislature this year would create a Cold Case Task Force under the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to open up those old files.
Police agencies consider body cameras, with reservations

"A lot of people look at body cameras as being the be all and end all that is going to solve all of the problems, but that's just not going to be the case," Sheriff Sadie Darnell said. "They are not going to instill trust between law enforcement and our community. We have to do that ourselves."
Quinnipiac polling misleads again on medical marijuana

They're claiming that Floridians support medical marijuana by 84.14 percent, which is not far off from their initial poll last spring which pegged it at 88 percent.

Gun evacuation bill heading to governor's desk
Last year, the original measure stalled, after law enforcement came out against the bill, saying it was too vague. This year, the Florida Sheriffs Association and other law enforcement groups are on board with bill, after a provision was put in to allow a timeframe of 48 hours for the amount time people have to evacuate with their firearms.
Sheriff wants 'body farm' to study human decomposition
The University of South Florida and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office have joined forces to bring this particular proposal to life. The program, dubbed the Facility for Outdoor Experimental Research and Training (FORT), is being proposed to serve as a resource and training center for Florida's medical and legal communities.

Escambia weeds out 90 marijuana plants in 2014; Santa Rosa 234
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services works to prevent the cultivation and distribution of marijuana through the Domestic Marijuana Eradication Program, which is a joint effort with the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Agency and local sheriff's offices and police departments in 49 counties across the state.
Osceola County Sheriff's Office plans on-site clinic
