I am a professional writer, but I often hate my writing. I wish it was more concise and powerful. And it certainly doesn't read as smoothly as the work of my literary heroes. Recently, I began to wonder: Could a software program make me better at my job?
The Hemingway App, an online writing editor created in 2013 by brothers Adam and Ben Long, promises to do just that.

I came a little late to e-books, but I became a convert in 2010 when my older daughter was born. I needed a way to read books with one hand (and in a dark room), so I got a Kindle. The Kindle and ice cream sandwiches — also easily managed with one hand — are what got me through the brutal early weeks with a newborn, when you basically can't put them down. Now I'm on my fifth Kindle.

Last month, Associated Press media and technology writer Ryan Nakashima started an experiment on user behavior and online ads. On Wednesday, he published the early results.

In the scramble to serve Facebook, publishers have pivoted to video, with some disastrous results. Not Slate. It is betting big on text and podcasting this year, supported by new hires, ad strategy and site design.
"The big story is, we're pivoting to words," said Julia Turner, editor of Slate. "We're going to be experimenting with all media, but we spent lot of 2017 looking at the fundamentals of the business of the written word and podcasting and found a strong case in investing in both."

Mark Zuckerberg is upending the News Feed, what people see on Facebook every day, in a way that will boost posts from friends, while downplaying messages from brands and media companies, even video posts.
The Facebook CEO announced the changes on the social network on Thursday evening, and it sounded like a warning for publishers and media partners that rely on the platform to reach audiences.

If Facebook's announcement that its News Feed algorithm was being altered to favor posts from friends and family over those from publishers and pages came as a surprise to anyone, it probably shouldn't have.
A source at the social network even said, "We've been openly discussing the decline in organic reach for a long time — almost four years. I know it's still surprising to many, but it certainly wasn't a secret."
