Columbia Journalism Review
"What's it like to work at a local newspaper?" That's the question we asked journalists across the United States at the end of last year, as part of a new study supported by the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University.
The conclusions, derived from an online survey of 420 journalists at small-market newspapers (with a circulation of under 50,000), reveal a cohort that is actively embracing digital technologies and wants to know more about their potential.

Want to become a better person? Then you might want to consider picking up a book because according to a new study, reading regularly could make you kinder and more empathetic. Since the earliest days of my novel-writing career, readers have written to me to thank me for my books and to ask how they can best support me and other writers whose work they enjoy. Nearly 15 years later, I have a pretty comprehensive answer for them!
Writers' commercial and critical fortunes are intertwined: a writer whose books perform well is a writer whose publisher buys and promotes more books from them, creating a virtuous cycle, as promotions beget more sales and more promotions.

Snapchat just dropped another update, and it changes, well, almost everything.
The update adds new "limitless" snaps (for snapping without time constraints), looping videos, emoji doodling, and a new Photoshop-like "magic eraser" tool that removes objects from your photos. If that sounds like a lot to take in, that's because it is. Taken together, the changes amount to one of Snapchat's biggest updates so far.

News orgs have struggled with platforms for a long time. They don't know how to find a fair working relationship because it's hard to quantify the benefits for each side. What is the unit of value to ground the negotiation?
Facebook, Google, Twitter and all the rest are always selling the idea that they drive a lot of traffic to publishers' web sites and, therefore, publishers can't afford not to work with them.

Ever wondered why growing food at home never seems to save you any money? Two researchers, Dr. James Ward (University of South Australia) and Dr. John Symons (Victoria University) think they may have the answer, and it lies in mathematics.
Their work, published in the free open access journal Horticulturae, uses a mathematical optimisation technique called "linear programming" to design urban food gardens that deliver the maximum cost-saving to households.

When New York City's Central Park gets crowded, wouldn't it be lovely to retreat to a quiet stretch of green that few know about and even fewer can access? Take Sutton Square, a bucolic expanse along the East River surrounded by 18 townhouses in an L shape along Sutton Place and Sutton Square (a continuation of East 58th Street).
Bad news: Only owners of those homes can access it. Caitlin Zucker was one of the lucky ones.

Turns out New Jersey is not the Garden State.
At least, not officially.
The state Senate voted on a bill this week that would designate "Garden State" as the state slogan. The phrase has been on the New Jersey's license plates since the 1950s, but was never officially adopted as the state's slogan. The bill was introduced after a Girl Scout troop discovered the state did not have a slogan written into law.

If you follow me on Twitter/are friends with me on Facebook/have seen me on the street any time in the past six months then you almost certainly know: I wrote a book! A real book! A book that adults read and decided to print on actual paper and put between a real-life cover and put in honest-to-goodness bookstores. But as it turns out, writing a book doesn't automatically make you the relatable heroine in a romantic comedy.

S-Town breaks 40 million downloads in its first month. That's global downloads, by the way. I wrote up the milestone for Vulture, and to conjure a sense of the context, I hope you don't mind me quoting myself: "It's the biggest rollout a podcast has ever seen in the medium's history, solidly beating the previous titleholder, Serial season two, which saw an average of 4 million downloads per episode in its first 30 days."

All regional meetings and connect meetings are intended to keep local members up to date with news from the organization. Connect meetings are considered less formal and are purely a social event where members can get to know each other better. Both members and non-members can attend the meetings. All meeting should be coordinated with the Regional Directo, but you do not need to be on the GWA board to start the ball rolling and be the organizer.
