Given the details of the settlement and what has already occurred in the case, Judge Denise Cote is likely to approve the e-book price-fixing settlement between the Department of Justice and three of the largest U.S. publishers, according to an antitrust lawyer familiar with the case. On April 11, three of the largest U.S. book publishers, Hachette, Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins, agreed to a settlement with the Justice Department.

Barnes & Noble sales weak on Nook returns
Reuters
Share

Barnes & Noble Inc reported lower-than-expected quarterly revenue, hurt by disappointing sales of its Nook digital books and e-readers, and the top U.S. bookstore chain expects sales at its stores to fall this fiscal year. The bookseller's sales in the fourth-quarter were hurt by returns of the device from retailers as well as price cuts put in place on some versions of the device to compete with Amazon.com's Kindle franchise.

No, Virginia, e-books don't publish themselves

From Philip Elmer-DeWitt: Whenever I write about the e-book business — especially in the context of the Justice Department's antitrust suit against Apple and five book publishers — someone in the comment stream invariably suggests that e-books are vastly overpriced because the publishers who sell them incur none of the usual costs of printing and distribution. But e-books don't write or edit themselves.

Why does Amazon pay only an 18 percent royalty for some e-book sales?

From Nate Hoffelder: Earlier this week, I set out to answer the question above, but as of this morning I've realized that I cannot. Neither KDP Support nor Kindle PR have been able to tell me anything other than the boilerplate answers posted online, and after going back and forth on this issue I've come to the conclusion that they simply don't have the information.

Why Kobo is Amazon's only global competition
Wired

From Tim Carmody: I may be unhealthily obsessed with global digital publishing. I mean in a creepy, stalkerish, guy-who-stares-at-you-too-long-on-the-bus sense. When I look at global publishing, I do the math in my head, I see the pieces coming together, all the different possible futures, the perils of bridging such a fragmented system, and the tremendous payoff for anyone who can pull it off — and I whisper: "Yes. This is the future — for me, for you, for all of us."

Homeowners exchange bit of privacy for more garden, socializing
The Wall Street Journal

How much do you like your next-door neighbors? Enough to share your backyard with them? A surprising number of homeowners are bucking the notion that good fences make good neighbors and taking down the fences in favor of bigger gardens and more space to entertain. Some are landscaping communally, turning a previously neglected corner into a shared garden and dining space.

How to get started with native plants
Mother Nature Network
Share

Native plants often get a bad rap when it comes to the home landscape. For many homeowners, the perception of native plants is that they are rangy and weedy. That meadow of wildflowers waving in the wind is a beautiful sight, but the individual plants aren't pretty. Besides, as the thinking goes, who wants the naturalized look of a meadow in a stylized subdivision of manicured lawns and tightly clipped shrubs?
